Must be the new math, but I come up with a min budget of 24K. Figuring on getting 9 for the current truck plus the 15K. Now if you have a buyer of your truck for 15K, gives you even more flexibility.
Surely one can find a nice truck between 22-28K. Hard to find, but an '07 GM with the 8.1 would be nice, or a Ford with the 3v V-10. If you want gas, you will get a much nicer chassis for the same money.
You should be able to get a decent 2010-2011 F250 with the 6.2 for that kind of money. There were a few around here around $30k advertised so I would think $28k or so would be doable.
Didn't the 6.2 come out in 2011 in the Super Duty?

You might want to read this comparison test on the vehicles you are interested in. If you like your current truck, you'll love a 2007.5+ GM HD gasser. The 6-spd trans really makes a large difference in how it pulls plus all the other improvements with GMT900 over GMT800.
If looking outside of GM, I recommend Ford's 6.8L V10, skip the 5.4L. 2011 offered the 6.2L which is also great. The Ram I do not like the trans gear ratios compared to Ford/GM 6-spds. But the tests and owner experiences all say it is strong. If you go with gas, find a shorter axle ratio truck. 4.xx instead of 3.73.

Your DW needs to loosen the purse strings to make that happen to get anything worth being seen in.
