using ipad for navigation

purchased a ipad 2 wi fi only to use navigation apps on the road.
it is useless because if doesn't have a gps. Live and learn

I use this on my android tablet and phone. Having a 10.1" screen for navigation is very nice. The latest version (10.5 for android) is much improved, too. I have GPS inbuilt to my tablet.

Also look for long battery life, this is something like 6-10hrs. Only ever killed it once.

Yes, internet with mifi, save PDF of camping RSVP, camping checklist, etc.

Been using about 2 yrs on tablet. Using previous version of Copilot for quite a few yes. We don't always have cell coverage when we travel and needed offline software.

If you have a smartphone there are several great GPS apps that DO NOT require wifi or cellular connection once you download the maps on your phone. TomTom and Sygic are two I have used and can't decide which of the two are better. The built-in GPS handles the maps for you with NO added cost...

Download the app and maps. Buy the Bad Elf or something like that and you are good to go. We use that when traveling and it's great. Nice big screen and it also talks to you.

My son uses a cheap gps w/bluetooth and connects his "wifi iPad" using the bluetooth. Places the GPS on the dash and uses the "Navigon" app. No internet needed,

I have the "3G" model and it's the best GPS I've ever had. I can hear the directions thru my bluetooth hearing aids.

I don't go traveling without it. 🙂

Never had an Apple product but my android navigates and talks to me. Like mention if you are out of tower range they don't work. However, I only need navigation in large towns. On the open road I just point my vehicle in the right direction on the interstate. I have a Garmin GPS and never use it. Easier to use smart phone apps.

Even if you add GPS to your ipad, where will it get the map data? Do you have a MiFi / Hotspot already, or will you be using an offline map program? Google used to let you download large segments of their maps, but they have eliminated that feature.

the problem with ipad or a smartphone for a gps is it works if you have a signal from a cell tower if your out of cell range your gps is no good. always better to get a dedicated gps system. smartphone,ipad gps are ok in the city get out in the wilderness forget it.

you need one with a 3G connection... or you need you use your smart phone as a hot spot.... I bought a second Ipad just for the 3g....

Also, GPS systems are usually much cheaper than an ipad. I purchased a Garmin three years ago and it came with life time map updates. I've seen them advertised for under a hundred dollars.

Yup. A GPS is really the item to buy for navigation. IMHO the way to go. It speaks the directions for you, so you don't have to keep taking your eyes of the road to look down at an iPad! Plus what happens when you are not around a wifi signal. :S
