Wife and I upgraded our tow vehicle a few months back from a 150 SuperCrew to a 2016 F250 CC gaser 2 wheel drive. We test drove 2 identical trucks. One a 2wheel drive and the other a 4 wheel drive. My wife found the 4X4 difficult to get into because of a bad back. I told her that we didn't need 4 wheel drive. Haven't had a need for one in 20 years. Fast forward to last Saturday night. We attended a wedding in the country where it had been raining cats and dogs for 2 days. Yep, the parking was in a grassy field on an up hill slope. Yep, you guessed it. We sunk up to the rims on the truck. Me and several others had to be towed back to the road. Guess this truck is a little heavier than the old 150.....


Lesson learned, stay on the pavement !

Just used 4 wheel drive up by Leadville Colorado yesterday, they had 8 inches of snow on the ground when we left. Would never buy a truck without it.

I routinely forget about that feature too. Luckily I've never been stuck by it.

Yeah these trucks have traction control. All vehicles made after 2012 are required to have some form of stability control program. My 2012 F150 also required me to hold it down for about 10 seconds to completely turn it off. If not, then the computer would start braking and reducing engine power every time the wheel slipped because it is thinking I am loosing control on the highway. Turning it off or putting the truck in off road mode made a huge difference in how far I can go since the computer is not slowing down my forward momentum.

When I bought my first 4x4, I thought now I can get to better hunting areas. I talked to a landowner about driving across his snow covered property, to get to where I intended to hunt. He said okay, if you want to walk across the snow covered mile. I said, I have 4x4 to cross, and then plan to walk sloughs and trees on the next section over. I've always remembered his words, and found them true, in many cases. "A 4x4 only gets you in deeper, before you get stuck".

Anyway, getting stuck in the snow...no big deal, takes a little work, before getting out. Now getting stuck in the MUD, like ShinerBock, is going to be a much bigger deal, and a few passes through the underbody spray, at the car wash, before that mud turns to cement. 🙂

Needed 4 wheel twice in the last two weeks soggy gravel RV park pads. First time I've needed it with this truck and trailer.

Had to use mine last night to park it. Let clutch out in reverse, nothing but wheel spin.

Like most optional equipment, 4wd will mostly pay for itself on trade-in/resale. If you do the math of up front cost of many options like higher trim packages,a more powerful engine, a diesel engine over gas in an HD, or even 4wd and calculate how much more you get on resale with these options than without, you really aren't paying that much for them in total ownership. Not only that, but it makes the vehicles much easier to sale.

I've seen precious few trucks of any nature that come with "off road" tires and the type of tires that are on a new truck should be pretty far down the list of priorities anyway since most of them are cheap tires. Even most 4x4s don't come with aggressive AT tires except a few up scale models like Raptor, trail boss chevies, power wagons or maybe Rebels.

Agree. Very few tire options for a true off road tire. If that is a priority, simply order/purchase the cheapest wheel/tire combo available on the trim level you choose and swap them out and sell the stock set.
