Of an acorn falling from tree in campground and blowing a hole through lid on vent fan in bathroom. Well that is what just happend to me. How hard are those to replace? It has the brand name Ventline on it.

Actually, I don't think its that rare. I had similar damage to a vent lid. It only cracked a bit though, and didn't fall though.

The roof of my old popup had about 15 small dents in it...

Ed and the naturalist have it nailed. When those standard vent lids get a little sun baking, they become very brittle and crack rather easily, sometimes shattering. Putting on the vent covers from either camco (cheapest) or Max Air will protect the brittle vent lid. They seem to hold up very well to the sun and also give you the ability to leave the vents open, even if rain is in the forecast. Very nice to leave open when stored and not walk into an very hot, closed up camper.

Many years ago my Mom & Dad were camping at a state park under a big shade tree. Pluuuunk, that shade tree dropped a walnut on Dad's head!!:E He had a nice headache the rest of the weekend.

To a vent cover in poor condition it wouldn't take much. Very easy to replace. 5 minute job

Sounds to me as though the vent lid had accumulated enough sun damage to have become brittle, so for what it is worth, it was soon to shatter or turn to dust on you anyway. You got a couple weeks less use from it that it would have otherwise rendered.

And yes, pretty easy to replace. Ditto Ed's recommendation to add one of those housings, too, while you are up there. Those things are worth their weight in gold.

While you are up there, put one of these over the vent cover. Then you can leave the vent open all the time, even during rain storms.



And it will protect your vent led from future acorns.

Hard to believe that there could be an acorn this early in the season large enough to damage anything. The Oak tree in our back yard doesn't drop acorns until sometime in the Fall.

To answer your real question, it is easy to replace the vent lid, but there is a need to get onto the roof.

1. From inside the bathroom, remove the plastic trim below the vent. On ours, one screw in each corner.

2. Remove vent lid crank handle and then remove the screen. On ours, two screws hold the screen in place.

3. Remove two screws from crank mechanism, which will allow the lift bar to be moved around so that the wheel at the end of the lift bar can be removed from the track on the inside of the lid.

4. Go up onto the roof and lift the lid back until it comes free of the hinge.

There are several hinge designs and it is best to take the old lid with you so you get a new lid with the right matching hinge.

Buy a lottery ticket, with those odds. Ventline replacement covers can be found at Camping World and most RV dealers.They are not hard to replace. Suggest that you bring what is left of your lid to get the right replacement cover as there are several to choose from under the Ventline brand.

Last week wife pickedup pine cones that are call widow maker, or maybe a window taker, in northern Ca. There are very heavy and about the size of a foot ball.
