What size WDH??

Getting ready to do a PDI on a new trailer - Grand Design 2670MK. Included in the price is an Equalizer WDH. What size should I get? GVWR of the trailer is 8495. So hitch weight could be up to 1275. But realistically, I expect the tongue weight to come in at around 975. At PDI I can have it checked. But of course, that weight will be without "stuff" in the trailer.

So, 1K bars, 1200, or even bigger? What bad things happen if you oversize the sway control?

Another vote for going with the 1400# Equal-i-zer system. My TW ranges from 900 to just under 1,000 (varies due to specific trailer load scenario) and I have been using the 1200# Equal-i-zer system for over 25K miles with no issues.

I also suggest the 1400 4 point hitch. I used the round bars for years and when I got my last new TT I went all out so to speak and got the 4 point. love it, easy to set up and take down , helps so very much on sway and no grease on my hands and pant legs.

Go with 1400lb bars/14000lb system in this situation. Your wont regret it.

I also suggest the 1400/14000 Equal-i-zer 4 point hitch. That is what we are using. It works well. No down side.

I'd say it depends on how much you plan on loading in it. My campers dry weight were nearly identical at 6500lbs and 650 tw. I packed lighter as I had a half ton, loaded weight was 7500lbs with a 900lb tongue weight. Then kids came around and I was approaching 8000lbs loaded and when the second kid came along I got a RAM 3500 as the quad cab wasn't big enough.

The 1200lb bars are good for 800-1200
the 1400lb bars are good for 1000-1400

I thought I got the bigger one at the time incase I wanted to upgrade to a larger tt however knowing what I know now I probably would have gotten the 14k one as that really was the larger one for me the 12k one was sized just right.

After year three I stripped everything down and wire brushed everything to repaint. Upon inspection. I noticed my hitch head weldstart had cracked. Equalizer sent me a new head once they received a picture. Great service.

One other thing to think about is that the Equalizer brand hitch is not allowed to be used without the weight distributing part. Had I know that I would have looked into another brand. Now that I am getting a 5er the hitch is not use able for me.

No drop at all if you want to know the truth. My Arctic Fox is so tall that the trailer's tongue is practically even with the bumper.

Also - owned a Reese Dual Cam for 12 years and loved everything about it except the noise. You'd turn heads all the way through the park.

The Equal-i-zer is quiet by comparison, and the camper feels bolted to the back of my truck. No kidding - rock solid. Can't say enough good things about it.

Great advice! AngryBert... I see in your sig that you have a RAM 3500. Did you have to get a longer drop shank for your WD hitch? If so what size /or/ how much drop do you have? TIA

My last bumper pull had 1250 hitch weight and I went with the 1400# Equalizer hitch. It worked great.

Since you don't know for sure, I would use the GVWR of 8495, and use 13-14 percent of that. 13 pct is 1104 lbs, 14 pct is 1189. So, I would opt for a min of 1200. That way you should be covered for weights up to your GVWR.

Don't cut it too short in case you add an extra cheeseburger to the tongue weight (grin).

You could go 1400 if you wanted with no real impact in my opinion.

Good advice from AngryBert-63 above. 1200 or 1400lb bars.

But, for a 33 footer and since you are rolling all this into a new package, I suggest you do an upgrade from the very basic Equalizer hitch to something like:

Equal-i-zer
Reece Dual Cam
Blue Ox Sway Pro (my choice).
