We are planning to visit Wisconsin and Minnesota this summer. Sure would appreciate any suggestions on where to camp and what to see while there. Will be heading out from northern Ohio. Prefer quiet campsites like in state, federal or army corp of engineers, etc. Thanks in advance!

Red Barn Campground in Shell Lake, WI is a good one if you have kids. They have animals on site and the kids can walk and pet them. Kids can also do horse back rides (very slow rides within the campground), and they can harvest an egg from the chicken coop.

Wildwood campground near Taylors Falls, MN is a decent place to stay and is near Interstate state park with lots of excellent hiking, exploring, and canoe/kayak rental. Also near Wild Mountain which is a water park with alpine sleds and go-karts.

Camp near Duluth, MN and explore that city along with places like Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse and a day trip to Grand Marais.

Check out Itasca State Park and visit the Mississippi head waters, climb their old fire observation tower, and drive/hike through the park. Very pretty!

I've heard good things about the new Minneapolis NE KOA and we're checking that out very soon. It's close to the Twin Cities if you're looking to explore that area.

Weekend availability at MN state parks is hard to come by if you want electricity but weekday availability is easier to find.

I am from Wisconsin and have camped extensively my entire life. I live about 10 miles from Wisconsin Dells and would encourage you to avoid the area. The only thing there is waterparks and t-shirt shops. Devils Lake SP has great rock climbing, swimming, hiking, etc. Northern WI has a lot of primitive campsites and modern sites. Bring along your kayaks, canoes, bicycle and hiking boots. If you want personalized help, send me a PM and I will give you my phone number so that we can talk.

SE Minnesota is very scenic and has plenty of camping options. Fri and Sat nights are the toughest to find campsites during the summer. Lanesboro is a quaint small town in bluff country with biking, kyaking, etc nearby. (Root River trail). The town has 2 small city campgrounds with E+W - arrive on a Monday and get a site. (No res). Check out Lakehead boat basin (Campground) in Duluth, really neat place to stay for a few nights while checking out the Duluth area. Not too hard to get reservations. Mystic Lake in Twin Cities has a nice RV park if you like casino RV parks. Lebanon Hills County Campground also good for visiting Twin Cities area.

Thanks to all for suggestions. Please keep them coming. I never realized finding sites in either state was going to be so hard.

If you don't have reservations yet it will be hard to get into any of the popular state parks, especially if you need electric. ( less than half of sites have electric in Wisconsin) You might find one if you keep checking and hope for a cancellation. They are all great, things to do in and around the park. We have camped at most of them with Penninsula SP in Door County our favorite, spending a week there in August. Been to many SP's in Minnesota also, mostly in the southeastern part of the state. Nice clean parks, tend to be more rural in location. Best of luck getting a site, then just google things to do around the park.

Go north. Get up in the North Woods. Somewhere like Hayward or the UP of MI is really fun.

Do a Google search for `______ tourism' and put the State in the blank and read what the specialists recommend for their area.
Search this Forum for the State/town/area of interest in the RV Parks section for campgrounds.
We spend a week in Door County each summer.
