Who checks their oil?

After doing an oil change?
Do ya dump in the reccomended amount of oil, put the cap on, slam the hood down and takeoff?
Or do you check to make sure it reads right on the dipschtick?

Apparently only me...lol. I mean I do it form time to time, but it takes what it takes.

I do like the leave it a qt low idear to see if it's making oil or not, but I don't have a 6leaker so that hasn't been a big concern of mine.

I was planning on putting a pit in my garage floor when I built my garage. The inspector informed me that if I did put one in, he would make me fill it in and then would inspect my garage every year to make sure it was not dug out again. He has stopped to see if I cut the concrete to install the pit. I greatly dislike that man.

On my truck specifically, I check the oil level BEFORE I drain the oil. If it isn't where I left it, I would know something was wrong.

I also check it after filling, giving it time to drain down from the heads, but before running the engine. The dipstick won't show accurate for a long time after running.

The book calls for 15qts. I only run 14. I want the oil level to be in the center area of the crosshatch marks. If it makes oil, I want to be able to see that. It doesn't use any oil, and it doesn't make any, so far. Occasional oil lab tests keeps me verified and in the loop.

I will admit to becoming complacent about checking oil level between changes. Something about checking time after time after time, for years, and never needing to add any, makes me complacent. I'm more likely to just look underneath on the concrete every day to make sure there aren't any drips.

I always check it following an oil change and then again after it has been driven for a day or so. Also checking for leaks as well. A minute of time is worth it if I find something amiss with the oil level.

Nice! I'd LOVE to have a grease pit or a lift....not picky.

Unless I'm not sure of the capacity I don't. If it takes 7qts on time, it takes 7qts every time.

I have had my oil changed by others one time in my life, that was a free change by the dealer. Well when I got home the dipstick was way over full, the idiots put in too much oil. Took it back and they still got it wrong. Never again!

I do check the oil after I change it, but on my 6.7 Ford diesel the cable type dipstick is about useless till it sits for a day. Then I get one chance to check it because the cable drags oil up the tube and subsequent checks are again useless.

Many years ago I forgot to put the drain plug back in a vehicle. Thankfully I checked the oil before starting.
That taught me to always check.

It wasn't too many years ago I did the same. Well only put a wrench to one of the 2 drain plugs (bike). That quart of oil came out at about 11,000rpms in 3rd gear uphill. Wish it had drained out in the trailer! No more multitasking while doing oil changes!

You've probably all heard about the guy who went into the auto parts store and asked for a new dipstick. Said his old one didn't reach the oil anymore.:S

thats about as bad as the guy who went to the auto parts store and when asked what he was looking for he said, "how about a new gas cap for my Yugo....the worker replied "sounds like a fair trade to me"

I pour my used oil on the ground...I figure if it came from there, it should be ok to go back. (I am just kidding) I take it to the recycle area when I get some, but I do not change my oil myself too much because it is much easier for the dealer to rotate the tires and stuff.

In our area used oil is picked up curbside so disposing of it is a non-issue. I generally check the level after I run it a little bit to distribute the oil through the system. I do not bother with pre-filling the filter in any of my vehicles. It would be a massive PITA to do it in the truck with the idiotic filter location.

Grit Dog, you must be bored today!
I have always checked after changing. I check as needed between changes, the Ram uses about a quart between 10K changes so about once a month.
