A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

I included Duchess with us when Butterscotch was put to sleep. She is normally very afraid at the vet's office, but that day she was 100% focused on Butterscotch. She was on the table with her and kept her muzzle in Butterscotch's face until she breathed her last. After a few minutes, she indicated she wanted down and she was ready to leave. She grieved for Butterscotch after that, but she knew she was sick. I feel like she may not have understood everything, but she knew Butterscotch was not coming home.

I did this because when I had Bailey put down I didn't take Neal. Neal was handicapped and also had seizures. Bailey was a loner, although he tolerated Neal, but I never knew how much Neal relied on Bailey. We almost lost him as he just really went off the deep end. Physically he was sick and it took a long time to get him back on track physically, but he never got over losing his best friend. He did not understand where he went and kept looking for his "lost" friend. It was terrible to watch. So I decided after that, I would include the other dog(s) so they would "know."

Just something to think about.

Thank you for your prayers.

I have two Papillons. My male Papillon Monty has been sulking for the past week or so. When I come home from work, he just goes into the front bedroom and lays around. He is finally coming around the last couple of days and being his old self. He even brought me a toy so we could play last night.

Dogs must go through a mourning process as well. My two Papillons had been around Murphy there whole life.

We lost Murphy a week ago today. This time last week, she was still alive. I went home around noon time to check on her and she was really panting and having trouble breathing. The last time I saw her on our dog room camera was a little after 1:30pm. She got up and got a drink of water and then laid down out of site of the camera. When Donna got home at 4:30, she was gone.

I am really having a hard time with her death. Donna and I don't have any children and she was like a daughter to me. I know time will make things easier but right now I am really having a hard time.

I haven't been on here for a little while and just now saw this and I am so very sorry. We all just love our Furry Kids so very much!

Our Macy is 15 and is really showing her age, your talking about Murphy being more like a Daughter really hit home for me. Growing up we always had Doxies but they were always "Family" Pets. Macy is the first Pup that was really mine. I was 42 when we rescued her at 16 months so we are the only loving home that she's ever known. For the past 6 months or so she's been glued to my side, day or night (I'm retired and am home most days all day). This is a real change as she was more of a Mommy's girl but I will treasure each and every minute that we get to spend together. You mentioned how the other Pups were acting since losing their Sister. This is my fear also as our Papillon Sandi has only knew life with her Big Sister and does not like to be separated for any reason.

We will be keeping You, Your Wife and Pups in our prayers.

Richard glad surgery went well.

We had to take Pickles to the Vet yesterday.
She was coughing and it kept getting worse.
They diagnosed her with a trachea issue.
Hopefully the medicine they gave her will help.

Good morning everyone. THe surgery went well I am able to see. My sight is as good as it was years ago. So much better. I am able to read the computer screen and the computer key board. I will be able to perform the wedding ceremony this weekend for my granddaughter without a problem. Thank you for your prayers.

Now to get back to life and camping. Hope to be able to do something about travel before we sell the camper. Daughter Robin is coming to stay with us for a while. Her husband Ed is about to take his last breath. He has kidney failure and other things going on. He is in hospice right now and soon as Robins gets his affairs finished she will be leaving Blakely and moving in with us. Her husband's will is such that all of the land and house will go to his children leaving Robin nothing and no where to live after his is gone. So she is going to leave Blakely and come to live with us until she can get herself settled here in this area. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure totell someone you love them.

The behavior of the health "professionals" was appalling. I'm glad things are looking up, at 95 even minor incidends can become major.

That trip back to Indiana brought back memories. I hope we never have to do that again!!
