331 Photo Speed Trap

Anyone traveling on Rt 331 through Alabama & Florida, Montgomery to Destin, look out for the new small town money maker. A SUV parked on the side of the road with "Photo Enforcement" signs just before. I was snapped in Luverne, later on return trip saw it further south in Brantley.

I live near the "speed trap" in question.

In Luverne the speed does NOT go from 55 to 35 it is 45 to 35. It then slows down to 30 because you are entering a residential area then into downtown. Speed limit has been that way for YEARS.

In Brantley the motorist is warned at least a 1/4 mile from the SUV that takes the picture. There is a school across the street and its an old residential area as well. The speed limits have been posted the same for YEARS.

Before the "speed traps" were established the standard was 15-20 mph over whatever the limit was. It was dangerous for the locals to say the least.

I try my best to stay under the speed limit because I've seen the results of speeding and it's the LAW. Everyone today thinks it's their right to drive as fast as they want no matter the danger it puts everyone else in.

If you want to speed, knock yourself out. But don't whine when you get a ticket for doing it! Rant over.

Seems that they should just put an electronic governor on everything. Problem solved. No tickets, no enforcement, no court costs, less accidents, less insurance claims, less wear and tear, less fuel use, less police needed....oh wait, they dont want that!!
So you would consent to the government putting an electronic governor on your car? Who is the "they" that don't want that? I don't want that.
No one who loves Liberty and freedom would want that. A lot of Americans no longer know what those words mean. It's no wonder our nation is in political upheaval.
I would be OK with such a system if it could be turned on-off. Especially if it was connected to the GPS and cruise control. Such a system should exempt you from a speeding citation in normal conditions.

Liberty and freedom is great until it affects someone else's liberty and freedom.

Obey the speed LIMIT signs what ever and where ever they may be and no one has to worry about fines and we would ALL be safer while traveling the highways and for pedestrians too.

Yes, it is just as simple at that. 🙂

Even the well posted "Fines are Doubled" in constructions zones are not enough to deter ignorant speeders. :S

It's not all that simple. There are places where they change the speed limit on blind corners or over a hill where you see the sign that went from 65 to 45 and when you see the sign it is too late. I have seen speed limit signs behind trees or bushes and you don't see them until it is too late

there are some interesting entries on speedtrap.org. one fella said that south hill hwy 58 was a speed trap cause he was ticketed for doing 75 in a 55 zone? I don't know of anyplace in VA where 75 is the legal limit.
don't like their definition of a speed trap "speed trap however
NOUN
1.
a section of a road where hidden police, radar, etc., carefully check the speed of motorists and strictly enforce traffic regulations: sometimes characterized by hard-to-see signals, hidden traffic signs, etc."
strict enforcement is not necessarily a speed trap. nor is using unmarked vehicles.

Answer is NO!
A speed trap is a place where the speed limit is set artificially low and with rapid changes so as to confuse unwary out of area drivers.
It is also a place where the police are concealed to catch drivers.
Your scenario does not meet the definition and we do not know if fines are being charged against anyone.

Enforcement does not equal speed trap specially when the car is marked "photo enforcement"

Into Luverne, 55mph to 35mph on a bend. Seems like a speed trap to me. At the time, night, no lights on SUV, parked on dark street on sidewalk in front of house. warning signs 10 & 20ft from vehicle.

It's funny, but I've been on sections of Texas one-lane-in-each-direction highways that were posted at 70mph. In the northeast, the road would have been posted at half that. I expect that's because Texas drivers are twice as good and those in Mass.

Or, in Texas it's a lot farther from Point A to Point B so they must go faster.

I note that on I-95 and I-85 a lot of the speed limits have been raised, some to 70 mph, others in the Richmond area raised from 55 to 60 etc.
Now were all of those folks who for years got ticketed doing 70 where it was 65 at the time driving dangerously? Heck no, common sense finally prevailed.

I remember years back in Minnesota where some roads were signed xx MPH ABSOLUTE and others just xx mph. you didn't want to exceed the limit on an absolute road.

reminds me of some town I read about years back that parked their police car with radar on the interstate going thru town and got a high % of their operating capital that way. however, their money grab got shut down by the state or fed. govt as there was not even an exit within their city limits.
