Absolute Route 66 sites to see and places to stay

We are planning a return trip to Michigan from our daughter's wedding in California in July and were wondering if anyone has some "must see" sites or suggested places to stay long the way. We have a number of the books that provide the history and site info but nothing that ales into account a 40' DP with a toad. Time is not an issue although we thought we might try and get to the FMCA rally in Iowa on 7-24 if it works out.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

I was one of four college buddys that drove Rt. 66 west to east from L.A. as far as Illinois back in '67 as part of our "around the USA" summer tour from Cincinnati. Out the northern route through Yellowstone and back on Rt. 66 in a '64 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback without A/C. Stayed in chapters of our fraternity when we could and cheap (really cheap) motels when we had to.
We kept a journal, but the guy that kept it passed away a few years ago. I wish I still had it.
Probably what infected me with the travel bug.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

I drove the entire length of 66 in 1966 in an Austin-Healey Sprite, when
a large part was still 2 lane highway (the 66 in '66 tour).

Here are a few links for you.

The old mining town of Oatman, Arizona, has to be a highlight of any Route 66 trip. But that 50 mile loop off Interstate 40 west of Kingman involves some pretty serious mountain driving between Oatman and I-40 outside Kingman. Oatman sits just about midway on that loop.

Those driving larger motorhomes might want to consider basing themselves in Kingman where there is quite a bit of Old 66 to see and then backtracking to Oatman with their toad.

When heading on east out of Kingman absolutely take the Old 66 loop up to Seligman. It's the longest unbroken stretch of Old 66. Consider stopping at Grand Canyon Caverns along the way. They have a somewhat rustic campground there, too. The cavern and campground are back off 66 a half mile or so.

And east of Flagstaff be sure to check out Meteor Crater at exit 233 on I-40. They have a nice little campground there, too. It's probably a better choice to overnight at than any of the campgrounds in Flagstaff.

In New Mexico, you might want to check out a few things in Albuquerque. South of I-40 is Central Avenue -- which is Old 66. On Eubank Blvd just a couple blocks off Central is the National Nuclear Museum . It sits right on the edge of Kirtland Air Force Base. Lots of good parking. They have some military aircraft and other equipment on display outside, too.

The Tram Ride up Sandia mountain is probably the big highlight while in Albuq.

And of course think about taking a balloon ride. Key word "think." It' pretty expensive. Perhaps two days fuel cost - per person! So you could be a thousand miles up the road for what a pair of balloon rides would cost. But then how often do you get out to Albuq?

At Winslow, AZ, right off the Interstate (40), you can drive into town and stand on the corner ( this is a reference to the Eagles song.) The town has the Standin on the Corner intersection immortalized with mural, 66 sign on the pavement, etc. Fun gift shop.

Near there is the Homolovi State Park which has electric hookups, interesting ruins and hikes. Very close to the Interstate at Winslow. Makes a good overnight.

I enjoyed seeing the Petrified Forest NP and Painted Desert Inn, old 66 site and again, easy on & off the highway. Brought back childhood road trip memories.

Shamrock, TX has some great old storefronts that take you into a time warp, if you traveled this area on family trips as a kid. The U-Drop Inn gas station is fun, and around the corner is one of those stone Texas shaped signs that once were at road entrances to the state. Good for photo op. (I was born in big D, so have lots of old black & white photos of us at those signs.)

Stop at Oatman, Arizona, (north and east of Yuma). It is a tourist trap, but well worth it. The town is named after the family that was kidnapped by Indians. One daughter was eventually freed by the Army, and her story was published but her husband bought up all the copies. Just what happened to her has always been in question. Her sister and parents died, but her brother survived the ambush and notified the Army. I believe Clark Gable vacationed here.

On old 66 in AZ, Hackberry is an interesting stop. It's just one store, now, but it has all kinds of old 66 stuff.
