Been on the road from Ohio for three weeks now. Sitting in a DQ in Palmer AK. DW wants to take a cruise to observe wildlife, and was wondering if there were any recommendations for the Anchorage / Kenai Penensula area? We're in no rush... Lol

Thanks for the replies! Heading toward Seward in a couple of days, and going to take one of the cruises from there. We were in Valdez last week and the drive IS scenic. We'll keep an eye out for the sheep....

Don't forget the glacier viewing cruises out of Whittier, which is closer to Anchorage than either Seward or Valdez.

There isn't much in the way of cruises out of Anchorage. As others have mentioned, there are many cruises out of Seward and Valdez. If you're pressed for time, go to Seward. If not, I've always found that a cruise out of Valdez is a good excuse to make the drive to Valdez...one of my favorite trips on the road in AK.

Near/in Anchorage:

- Drive slow going down to Girdwood; still have a better than even chance of seeing Dall Sheep on the roadside. Mostly ewes and lambs.
- Alaska Zoo on O'Malley Road: they have bear(s?), moose, caribou, dall sheep and wolverine plus others. Not a wild setting, but it's there.
- Portage Nature Center (or something like that) on the right side of the road driving to Portage. Again, animals in somewhat larger cages: bears, elk, musk oxen (?) , etc.

There are some riverboat cruises out of Talkeetna that go long enough that you might see some animals.

You might consider a flightseeing tour out of Anchorage, Palmer, or Wasilla.

A large number of tours out of Seward. Pick the length and amenities that suit your time, needs and budget and enjoy. Also Stan Stephens Tours run a short one to the Columbia glacier and a longer one to the Mears glacier, and the Lulu Belle runs tours out of Valdez. Highly recommend Stan Stephens and the Seward tours. We've used both multiple times. We're in Valdez right now and just rode the Stan Stephens tour to the Mears for the third time on Saturday.

We took a Kenai Fjords tour out of Seward and really enjoyed it. There are several to choose from.

We really enjoyed the Stan Stephens glacier tour out of Valdez. We saw lots of critters. We used our 2/1 TourSaver book - hope you bought one before your trip. Plus, you're moving along too fast! ๐Ÿ™‚
