We're traveling south on I75 from KY going to FL. What is the best route around Atlanta?

What they all said. Dead of night or just before sunrise thru Atlanta is a pleasant trip. Depending when I get to that area I stay at the KOA right outside town and decide.

I usually end up taking the bypass route around Atlanta.

That said one time I ended up on the bypass during rush hour and it was just as bad as going thru towntown Atlant only way worse with all the semi's driving at 90 miles an hour trying to kill ya!

I agree with the poster that suggested that you take I-65 south of Indianapolis and through Nashville. We take this route from the Kalamazoo area rather than I-75. We've gone 75 through Atlanta before and honestly didn't have any problems, but I don't like driving 75 through the Smokies in the winter. Plus there is a lot of truck traffic on 75. There obviously is truck traffic on 65 too, but it seems much less to me.

If you do consider I-65 I suggest that when you get to Montgomery, AL you veer off 65 and switch over to US231 and go toward Dothan, AL. South of Dothan you can catch I-10 east and depending on where you're going in Florida you might do well taking US-19 that goes along the west side of Florida. US231 and US19 are a 4-lanes and while they go through some small towns they are good routes where the speed limit is 65. If you're going toward Orlando or further south you should cut eastward on US98 toward Brooksville, FL. It's a good route and you avoid a lot of I-75 traffic.

Thanks. What's a good time to go through on Wed.? if there is a good time.

Just drive straight thru avoiding the morning rush hour if possible. During the evening rush the traffic will be going the other direction until you hit the city center and once you are south of the city the rush traffic has never seemed to be as bad to us. Also you can use the HOV lane if there are two or more of you in the vehicle.

Work-days -because Atlanta is such a spread-out commuter heavy city, from 6:30am-9:45'ish & 3:30pm-6:30'ish there is HEAVY RUSH hour traffic, from the subburbs (30'ish miles outside of Atlanta).

Coming South into Atlanta via I-75, if the timing is around morning rush hour, utilizing the 285 By-Pass (inbound traffic on I-75 & I-575 will be crazy) will avoid grid-lock, heavy traffic will be coming into
town on the other side of 285.

If timing is middle of day, staying on I-75 right through town, should be realitively smooth sailing (always chances for mishaps).

Relax, keep an heads up, also keep one lane over from side lanes, they can turn into off-ramps.

This has been discussed previously. Some go thru and others take the bypass; your choice.

Atlanta is a******shoot. I sailed straight thru and used both the east side and west side belt ways. They all work fine at non rush hours UNLESS there is an accident. Then you are screwed! One Sunday it took me 2 hours to go less than 10 miles. We were shunted off onto local roads and traffic was backed up for miles at every stop light intersection until we could finally get back on the interstate. During the week, traffic is heavy anytime of day, but rush hour is terrible. And we have encountered big delays more often than not. On weekends it is usually heavy but moving fast. Lots of aggressive speeders changing lanes constantly. We used to hit Atlanta twice a year when the wife's best girl friend used to live there. Thankfully she moved. I now avoid Atlanta totally. I65 to Montgomery is my preferred route to/from your area. From Montgomery you can head to Tifton, Ga for I75 or Dothan, Al to I10. There are some very nice highly rated GoodSam RV parks along the way.

There are 3 cities I would rather go out of my way then go through: NYC, Chicago, Atlanta. I went through Atlanta on a Sunday, between 10-3, encountered a accident in which I had to divert off I-75 for two exits then back on. The steering wheel still has indentations in it where my hands were gripping! It was like a race track going through that place!
