Carlsbad NM to Big Spring TX

Google maps gives me a couple of options: NM/TX 176 via Andrews or US62/180/87 via Hobbs and Lamesa only 15 miles further.

Any particular reason to go with the longer route other than wider shoulders? I've heard some roads out there get beat up pretty bad from truck traffic but road surface is hard to read from Streetview. An extra 15 miles is a small price to pay for a noticeably better road surface.

DennisVR,

As others have said, 62/180 from El Paso through Carlsbad is a good road and you should have no issues. Be aware though that there is a 120 mile stretch with zero services so fuel before you leave El Paso.

Also, depending upon the timing, you may encounter weather issues coming up through the Guadalupe mountains. You could see high winds, low clouds, and in the Winter it could be snowy or icy. Just keep an eye on things and be aware.

I drive 176 between Carlsbad and Eunice every couple of weeks. The 10 miles on the West end was just rebuilt within the last year and is in great shape. The 10 miles on the Eastern end to Eunice is also a good road. The biggest problem is the middle 10 miles or so that is not in very good condition and some spots have zero shoulder. On the positive side, with the oilfield situation so depressed there is much less truck traffic.

The extra few miles through Hobbs is not a real issue if you are concerned about the two lane with no shoulders.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will try to help.

62/180 from El Paso to Carlsbad is just fine... just make sure you fuel up before leaving El Paso. I don't know where you're going form there, but DO NOT take 285 from Carlsbad to Pecos as you leave. It's terrible!

We took the 62/180/87 route two years ago. Good road.

We have been on both roads. Either way is just fine. Two lane not much to see. A little truck traffic. I think the 62 /180 is a little better.

Lamesa has a K Bobs. We ate here the last time thru this area. Nice Place.

We have stayed at the Texas RV Park in Big Spring. Just off 87 no traffic noise. Good Park.
