We are thinking of traveling from Hurricane UT to Page through Kanab and then south to the east rim of the Grand Canyon in Jan.We will be traveling with a fifth wheel and have to go around Zion. Is that route feasible in Jan. I know it would easier to go around by Vegas but we really want to see the slot canyons at Page and this way we can do all this while we are still acclimatized to the colder weather. Temps don't bother us but snow and ice do. Thank you in advance

That is exactly right. For the official Grand Canyon. Which, incidentally, was my point. The area jwmll is talking about is between that East (Watchtower)area and Cameron. It is NOT in Grand Canyon NP and not along the Colorado River. The LITTLE Colorado River is east of this and runs pretty much north and south and then turns east west. There is a pulloff there you can take to see which is very, very minor compared to the Grand Canyon. It is hardly marked and for good reason; not much there.

OK, that being said I am going to digress just a little. The Little Colorado goes east and cross Hwy 89 and then turns south and, at one point on the res it has the Grand Falls. Don't know how I came across this but we went to find it one time and finding it was a chore but we had gotten there a couple of days after a snowstorm and lots of water going over it - it is spectacular! I heard it is wider than Niagara and also higher if you figure all the cascading before the final very tall falls. It is also known as the Chocolate Falls due to the water being very brown. We will return and see it again someday.

O.K. guys. Here's the Grand Canyon Nat'l Park's website describing the different areas of the park.

The EAST end is 26 miles from the Main area. It is reached by traveling on the East Rim Drive (Desert View Drive) and the famous 'Watchtower' is there along with Desert View campground. Yes, it is part of the national park and the views are of the Grand Canyon. We've been there and stayed in the campground. It's a very quiet area compared to the Main Area. The other quiet area is the North Rim.

Cameron along Hwy 89 is not part of the national park. You'd have to drive on Hwy 64 west to reach the EAST end of the park.

This discussion is making me chuckle. We did a "tour" of the Grand Canyon last Feb and went from east to west. There is a trading post in the middle of nowhere on the reservation between Cameron and the east gate. The tour guide pointed out the mini canyon behind the trading post that had been the site of where that guy walked the tight rope across the Grand Canyon for Discovery channel. She had watched it all being set up on her tours through there. Looks like I will watch the weather and road reports and decide in St George which way we go.

It is considered an integral part of the Grand Canyon.

My last trip between Kanab and Page was in May of 2008 and Hwy 89 nearly beat us to death. The seams in the highway were relentless. Constant pounding. Don't know if it's been improved since then or not. I was fairly new to driving a Class A, so maybe it was just me. Probably not an issue with your truck, though.

The east rim is on the eastern end of the canyon around Cameron and takes in the area where the little Colorado River joins the Colorado River and is mostly on Reservation land.

Have not been there in a couple of years, but when we were the roads around Kanab, Pipe Springs and some of Vermillion Cliffs were day to day. Blowing snow one day and completely melted the next.
