We will be traveling west on I-30 to merge onto I-20 in Dallas. My question is the best way to do this.

1- stay on I-30 through Dallas and merge on the west side of town

2- take I-635 south to I-20

3- some other suggestion to get around Dallas

Any other things I should know, best time of day, etc.?

We will be driving a 26 ft class c.

My first question would be, are you driving from Minnesota to someplace in the Southwest? If so, are you trying to avoid the toll roads in Kansas and Oklahoma to get there?

If those assumptions are correct, I would avoid all of Texas except the Panhandle and use I-35 to KC, I-49 and I-540 to I-40 at Ft. Smith, and then west on I-40 to your destination. Just some free advice from someone who grew up in the D-FW area (our house was 2 miles from I-30 and 3 miles from I-20). But you know what "they" say about free advice!

I didn't recommend TX-34 because of construction in Quinlan last time I was through there a few months ago. Is it completed?

Quinlan has grown a bit in recent years. The opening of the Walmart added a bit of congestion to the area.

TX-34 also avoids what seems to be years long construction near Royse City (I worked there for three years in the 90s and had commute through the I-30 rebuilding of the Lake Ray Hubbard bridge)

Another good alternate from I-30 to I-20 would be TX-19 from Sulphur Springs to Canton.

34 at Terrell is a good route to take for sure it will take you to I 20 and padredw is correct, when you get to the hwy 80 split stay left on I 20. 80 would take you to I 635 if you did take 80. I've been hwy 34 many times and you will miss more Dallas traffic going that route ...I 30 34 I 20 west.

I would have recommend this route, but I have no experience with it as we would never have reason to use as because of where we live.

Based on Duster's experience, I think this is the route I would take, just be sure to get on over to I-20 and do not take old US 80 into Dallas. (again, I have never used this route.)

I 635 - I 20 you will miss downtown Dallas and Ft Worth. Any time after 9:00 am and before 3:00 pm is good if there are no accidents.

Another vote on this route.
Also, you have Cedar Hill SP, City of Grand Prarie rv park, & Holiday CoE park (westay here a lot) if you need an overnight .

2- take I-635 south to I-20

Best because I-20 will flow smoothly around south of Fort Worth and Dallas, and I-635 will be the best way to get down to I-20.

I-30 to I-635 to I-20 is the safest route / most likely to avoid delays.

There is currently some construction on I-30 at the west end of downtown Dallas redoing the interchange with I-35E.

Got onto the wrong ramp/ lane in my truck a week ago, and I've driven that area for over 30 years.

I don't know how close to downtown Fort Worth the construction on north I-35W is currently. Haven't been that way in a few weeks.

US-380 from Greenville to McKinney to Denton isn't a good route now if you plan to take I-35W down to Loop 820. Heavy construction delays at I-3W and Loop 820. You could take 380 over to US-281 south of Jacksboro and that down through Mineral Wells to I-20. I'd only use that route if the radio traffic told me about major delays on I-20 south of the metroplex.

Timing.......I used to do 1-30 straight through late in the evening. After morning rush I635 is the best.
