From Scranton the shortest route is through Danbury, Waterbury, and Hartford on 84 to 91. I really don't like towing through this area its a highly congested and a difficult tow. Instead from Scranton we head to Port Jervis to the New York Through Way north to the Mass Pike. Its 30 to 40 miles longer and does cost more in tolls but it is well worth it to me.
As for heading West to Montana this is what we did last summer to stay away from Cleveland, Chicago etc. Fewer interstates and more back road driving. From Bangor head south on 95, take US Rt 2 west to Gorham NH at either Pittsfield or Lewiston Auburn head to Rt 2 via Norway to Bethel. Follow Rt 2 to Interstate 89 in Vermont, 89 N to Swanton VT, west on 78, 11 and 37 crossing into Canada at Ogdensburg NY, missing Montreal and Ottawa, In Canada 416 N to Trans Canadian, Weston Trans Canaadian to Sault St. Marie, cross into upper Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota to interstate 94 N. Dakota to Montana. You pass some nice national Lake shore parks in Mich, and Wis. Roosevelt NP in ND is worth a stop.
If you want more info let me know soon as we leave for Alaska on the 28th traveling that route to Sault Ste Marie then West on the Trans Canadian. If you have time stop in Acadia NP in Maine a great place to hike, bike, kayak and enjoy seafood.
