Roll Call Alaska 2013

Just thought I'd start a thread regarding who will be starting up to Alaska in 2013. It would be nice if we could share information so everyone has a memorable and safe trip.
We will be leaving around the end of May out of Las Vegas. We will be traveling with our 40' MH and towing our Equinox car. We are heading up with my husband's cousin and her husband and they have an airstream.
We have gone before but in 2005 so we are really looking forward again to the adventure. It is surely a trip of a lifetime and to do it more than once is a blessing. We are only on this earth for a short while.
Travel safe!

You can add another Florida couple to the Alaska Roll Call. My wife and I -- and Misty, our navigator -- will be leaving Tallahassee the first week of May, stopping first for a week or so at Glacier NP and reaching Alaska by early June. We hope to stay long enough to see the landscape turn white.

We've been to Alaska a couple times, but this will be our first time RVing. We've got no agenda except to stop and take in anything we find that piques our interest. We do plan to fly the grandkids up after school is out and let them experience the mountains, glaciers and wildlife.

I retired last year (my wife in 2009) and have been boning up on everything Alaska for months. With that said, it's amazing how much I've learned from folks participating in this thread. I've ordered the 2013 Milepost, Church's Travel Guide, Ron Dalby's Guide to the Alaska Highway, and I'll be ordering the Toursaver Coupon Book soon. We can't wait to get started.

Thanks Joe,

With all this trying to get ready and such I forgot the gas locations sticky and to think I read it to, it sure sucks to get old :S. I made a copy and well load that onto my travel computer. We travel with note books instead of the bigger laptops. So I have to make sure I have everything on it.

Dawson, Chicken and Tok are the available places to fuel up. A fire last fall at the Boundary Roadhouse has them closed as far as I have heard. If anyone hears of them reopening, please let the rest of us know.

The ferry at Dawson tends to start running toward the end of May, just after the Yukon River ice goes out and they have the road plowed open. The Customs station is also seasonal so check as to when the plan to staff it and be open.

It has always been toward the second or third week of June or late fall when we have been over the Top. Several of our forum members have reported crossing in late May so hopefully one of them will post with better info than I have from personal experience.

Last trip I fueled in Dawson and the again in Tok. Was driving a Dodge then with a 34 gallon tank getting close to 15 mpg. Sounds like you would be fine to do the same. I think on the fuel stop sticky at the first of this section the miles between stations are listed. If not I have them on my web site.

If I was in the Dawson area at the end of May, I would plan on going over the Top unless local information advised not to do so. The Yukon DOT crews will have the best info or stop in and talk to the locally assigned law enforcement officers.

Did a quick check and it looks to be about 200 miles from Dawson to Tok with Chicken at about the half way point.

Sue and Joe,

Is late May to early to take the Top of the World and Taylor highway or is better to wait till making our way back in late August or early Sept? Also what are the fuel stops like. I have a gas pickup with a 36 gallon tank and get around 11 to 11.5 MPG. I well also be carrying a couple of 5 gallon jerry cans but that is mainly for emergency and generator use.

As sue mentioned, it for the most part is just a good gravel road, the kind many of us learned to drive on many years ago, especially those of us that grew up in rural North America. Just slow down and don't be afraid to get your emergency blinkers on and come to a complete stop over at the side, as it would appear that sue's husband has done, in the photo she posted.

The Canadian side is much better because, they kept the road up on the ridges, where you have good drainage and it doesn't ever flood. Now on the US side, it almost appears as if some drunken surveyor was following a moose, as it wandered along the creek beds looking for willows to eat. LOL If it is raining or has been, just take it even slower as it isn't very far between Dawson and the Tok Junction with the Alaska Highway. I have done the Top probably 6 or so times but never kept count. While living in Alaska we would often just make a week or two vacation out of running from the Fairbanks area down to Whitehorse, spend a few days, head to Dawson for a few more and then wander on back to Fairbanks or Anchorage, depending on where we were storing our RV at that time. We made the same trip several times in our airplanes.

It is just a most excellent drive with beautiful scenery.

Rainy weather on the Top, on the US side, is not real fun.

This was on the Canadian side, with just starting to rain, the road in this section was chip and seal in reasonable shape, even had a center line or in Canada I guess it would be a "centre" line. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here I was practicing my tire changing skills. LOL This is the first and only tire I have ever had to change myself on any of our trips to Alaska, that have covered the last 52 years, since 1962. Had one starting to go flat as I was pulling into a station in Watson Lake, many years before when we had a Class C rig. I have changed flats in Colorado, Florida, Montana and a few other places but this was a first for me. But it is one of those experiences I will always remember. It was no big deal, just took a couple of hours of my time.
We were on the Canadian side, just a few miles from the Customs station, and pulled off on a good side road to have lunch. My wife commented that something outside was making a funny hissing sound.

Klondike Loop Question: This loop gets lots of press and we're considering driving it. But from Milepost it includes 112 miles of gravel roads from Dawson City to Chicken. What are the pros and cons of taking this route? Apparently bragging rights is one pro.

Some images of the Top of the World Highway are on my website http://suethomas.ca/TopOfTheWorld.html
Images of the Taylor Highway here http://suethomas.ca/TaylorHwy.html

The scenery, on a clear day, is spectacular. Even better in September with the fall colours. We often see moose along the route too. If you enjoy drycamping/boondocking, the possibilities are endless.

If the weather has been, or is, wet the route can be miserable. The road surface can be a bit slick, not so much on the Yukon side but on the newly refurbished gravel portion of the Alaska side.

We usually take 2-3 days to drive through, rather than being in a hurry. It isn't a route on which to make good time. Some places it is narrow, some spots are rough.

You also need to keep your eyes open for oncoming RVers who have heard the horror stories of soft road shoulders and who refuse to budge from the center of the road. An approaching Class A motorhome caused us to move over the road's edge & partially into the ditch, while towing our fifth wheel because he refused to budge off the middle of the road.

The tour buses on the route do move over and give room. This picture between the community of Boundary and the border in July 2011.
