Roll Call Alaska 2013

Just thought I'd start a thread regarding who will be starting up to Alaska in 2013. It would be nice if we could share information so everyone has a memorable and safe trip.
We will be leaving around the end of May out of Las Vegas. We will be traveling with our 40' MH and towing our Equinox car. We are heading up with my husband's cousin and her husband and they have an airstream.
We have gone before but in 2005 so we are really looking forward again to the adventure. It is surely a trip of a lifetime and to do it more than once is a blessing. We are only on this earth for a short while.
Travel safe!

Thanks Sue and Bob. Glad to hear about the diesel availability. But the extra diesel is still a very good idea.

Maybe I'm just paranoid about the short range, the bus range is ~1600 miles.

Our diesel truck has about a 250 mile range when we're towing the fifth wheel. We try to stay on the top half of the tank so that means we're filling up around 150 miles. No problems finding diesel.

Even so, we carry extra diesel with us because we can't predict when a service station is going to be out of fuel for a few days, until the delivery truck shows up. Apparently the can't even predict or they'd have deliveries more often!

The only place it is a concern is on the Dempster Highway where this the distance from the start of the highway to Eagle Plains is 370km (230 miles).

HI there Sue ! ๐Ÿ™‚
Has some place for fuel been added between Watson Lake and Ross
River ? The last time we went that way there was not anything at all along that road except for a spot about half way that Indians had set up a camp and were smoking moose and making jerky. seems it was about 235 miles between the two places .I remember meeting but one vehicle traveling toward Watson lake, and there were many stretches of the road that had grass growing between the wheel tracks in the center. But this was back in 1970 and a whole lot of water has run under the bridge since then.

The class C we're taking has short legs. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We only get around 300 miles per tank. That might be a problem in the Yukon.

What we're going to do to extend the range is carry two or three 5 gallon cans of diesel. Two cans will extend our range by ~130 miles, and there should be fuel available within that range.

Hubby cut down a hitch basket to mount on top of the Mini's roof rack, we look like we're going on safari. :C

Hopefully you won't need the extra fuel. People ride motorcycles to Alaska and mine was lucky to get 150 miles per tank. Diesel may be a different story.

enough cash to fill your RV tank. Never know when communications will be down!

We will be leaving the New Orleans area in late May and plan to cross the Canadian border around June 1. We will head up through the Alaskan Highway, spend time in Denali and the Kenai and head back on ferry from Haines in early September. I can't wait to be back in Canada and Alaska!

Thanks 2gypsies,

It is the bear things I was worried about most. I guess it would have helped if I had mentioned that. :S It was plain as day in my head!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

DW and I have lived in north county for about 25 years. Neither one of us are from Missouri. Hoping to sell the S & B and do some full timing.

I don't recall any regulations in Teklanika about screened enclosures but you might want to check beforehand. In the state parks it would be fine. However, bears are inquisitive and you just might return with screen shreds, especially if you plan to cook inside it. ๐Ÿ™‚ It would help against mosquitoes though. Hope someone else chimes in on your question.
P.S. We grew up in St. Louis and lived in Affton at one time.
