Route 299 in California

We would like to travel from Redding to Crescent City. GPS says route 299. Is this route doable with a large fifth-wheeler, 44 feet?. We just did Route 89 in Lake Tahoe and it was pretty tight. The camper bottomout twice. We would like something less stressful.

Here's one way to compare the two routes. Motorhomes and buses over 40 feet are prohibited in California Highway 199. CA DOT Motorhome Map No restriction for 299. Also the truck map shows 65’ Ca Legal KPRA* advisory. Highway 299 is a 65' legal route, no advisories. Having driven both routes I would take 299.

I currently live just off of 299 and I run my DP with a Jeep Toad up and down that road all the time with no problem. Just take it slow on the down grades, sit back and enjoy the scenery, it is quite spectacular. JH

We did it this summer, Redding to Eureka via the 299 with a F350 and a 39'Mobile Suites; beautiful drive, take your time and yes there is some long term construction. The 199 is an easier drive but why miss the scenery.

Same here! And if you take 199 to 101....you are only about 5-6 miles from Crescent City....you do not have to go to Brookings to go back south.

I drive 299 every week in a 18 wheeler , some road construction but its not a bad road. I would drive 299 before I would take 199. some really tight curves on 199. I grew in Crescent City and spent a lot of time driving 199.

Thank you for the quick responces. We will go I-5 to 199, and yes, we have a 4212 Seismic which is every bit of 44 feet plus the tow vehicle.

Is your RV 44' long? Or your total length with truck and trailer? If the RV is 35-38' long, many have said they have no problem with that.

299 is a LOT more rv friendly than 89, I have traveled both. It has some stiff grades but is doable as long as you don't try to rush. I was really glad we didn't have our fiver to deal with on 89.:D

Okay, just got the following comment from a guy that currently lives' in Trinity county about half way to Crescent City.

If your comfortable with it you should be ok kinda steep and windy if you wanted to you could go I5 to grants pass over to Brooking's Oregon then back down to crescent city

We have done 199 many times, towing our 36' fifth wheel with no problems.
Have not tried 299,so no help there. If I were going fro Redding to Crescent city, I would do 199 for certain.

I used to live in Trinity county many years ago. The road from Redding to Weaverville has improved a lot. Not sure on how it is now from Weaverville to the coast. I would think you should be okay. Call CHP and see what they say. Or the Trinity county sheriffs office.

We posted this question last year and were advised to stay on I-5 north to Hwy 199. 199 was OK for us with Class A and toad. Still windy and hilly but just allow some extra time. Check construction map. I saw about 3 construction spots on Google Maps for Hwy 199 but lots more on 299.
