Well, you all helped us get through through LA.

It is almost time to go through San Francisco. We will be approaching from the south on the 101. Want to end near the coast above S.F. Will go through on Sunday. What way do you all recommend?

That is good to hear, that is the route that I have used and did suggest earlier in the thread.

I also liked the route that msmith1199 suggested and I think I will try it on my return trip, but in reverse, crossing the Golden Gate southbound and exiting HWY 1 (19th ave.)at Geary and procede west to to Point Lobos to the Great HWY south to Sloat then back past the zoo and back to 19th Ave (Hwy 1). By doing this south bound all the parking is more accessible.

I have done this with Google Earth street View and it looks like a lot of good scenery along the coast. the Cliff House,Golden Gate Park, then past the Zoo. There also looks like there are a lot of areas to park and enjoy the view.

Well, we made it though SF. We opted for the 101 to 85 to 280N then over the Golden Gate bridge route because on google it looked like a prettier trip. Thanks all for the help.

Scroller and Rolln, appreciate the quick feedback and the web resources. I did follow Streetview and saw nothing on hwy 1. Sometimes those can be dated though, especially near construction.
Best,

We're planning to come down from the North on 101 and cross the GG. The RV warnings feature on Good Sams's Road Trip Planner says there's a 12'6" height restriction on the South Side of the bridge where the 101 and CA1 spit. Any truth to that?
Thanks

Maybe that area would show up on Google Earth street view.

FYI motorhomes 40ft and over are not allowed on 101 thru San Francisco. Hwy 1 is the "authorized route" There are no height restrictions I am aware of on HWY 1 through San Francisco.

Yes, how about a park name?

Depending on where you are coming from, I would second the 101 to 85 to 280N then over the Golden Gate bridge. The GG Bridge toll is North to South so you won't have to worry about that. Plus, for future FYI, you don't stop at the toll booth, you have to log on to the website and pay later.

We're heading that way on Saturday and our first two nights are at Spring Lake Park in Santa Rosa, then we head to the coast.

We've gone thru the city on 101. Just watch the signs. If you miss a turn, it may take awhile to get back on course.

Stay on 101 all the way through and across the Golden Gate Bridge and beyond. That's the way I go.

If you are coming from the south

Get off 101 just before San Jose and on to 85 and take that to I-280. Stay on I-280 to the exit for route 1, 19th ave,it is clearly marked and easy to do. Try to stay in the center lane and follow the signs thru SF Park to the bridge. Out standing scenery going over the Bridge

There no tolls or restrictions going north.

If you can Google Earth it you can see the whole thing.
I also stoped at the north end view area. I did a Google earth on it and you can do a virtual drive thru the whole thing.
