traveling south

Heading south through Atlanta couple questions, 1) is there a good time to drive through? 2) would it be wise to go down 95 south or even 65 south? leaving from cincinnati, traveling to Miami fl.

Should have been clearer, but this is in reference to the traffic volume, coupled with aggressive drivers. Can get a bit crazy at times.

At Jupiter, jump over on the turnpike. The tolls won't kill you like the drivers and congestion will.

Oh, and get a Sunpass ....it will save you time and money.

We drove down from NE Indiana to Ft. Lauderdale this past November, passing through Cincinnati on I-75. Rather than pass through Atlanta, we elected to take I-40 East at Knoxville to I-26 East at Asheville, connecting to I-95 South close to Charleston. According to Mapquest, this route was 20 minutes longer, but much more scenic and avoids Atlanta. The bad news is the stretch of I-95 between Jupiter and Miami, but you'd hit some of that anyway if you followed I-75 all the way. Something to consider...

I like coming down 75 to Chattanogga to Birmington,Ala to Montgomery,Ala down 231 thru Dothan to I-10...mabe 100 miles longer but nice ride..Chuck

If you are not willing to move with the flow through ATL it will be harder to move over (plenty of cars having to passing you) and you will get plenty of friendly waves (a sign that you are doing something to make them unhappy). Using 27 might be a better option... everyone will be happier.

Traveled this route end of February. I will always avoid in the future. Beside the right lane always disappearing the drivers are not very friendly. Many horns, speeding beyond the 55-60mph posted. It was cold outside but many had a window open and fingers flying in the wind. I will avoid Atlanta forever.

After I looked at the map I should have traveled I-75 south to Adair, to US 27 south to Buena Vista, east on SR 26 back to I-75

While JimShoe is correct about lanes becoming exits, it's not a reason to go hundreds of miles out of your way. There are four areas where the two right lanes become exits... on the north side for those getting on the bypass (I-285), downtown for I-20, for the airport, and then again at I-285 on the south side. I go straight trough often and try and do it at mid day or at night staying in the third lane from the right. There are plenty of miles between these four areas to move over two lanes before you get to the next area.
Three months ago I was impressed with how little construction there was from AFTER where I-675 joins up with 75 (south side of ATL) to the Fla line.

*At Lake City Fl you might want to take 100 over to I-95 and then south. 95 through Palm Beach county moves very well, not so well in Broward/Ft Laud.

Another option is at Knoxville, take I-40 to Asheville (A OK interstate and better than ATL) and then I-26 to I-95 since you are going to Miami... about the same distance plus no tolls.

I run it both ways 75 down to 285 and around the west side. Construction is bad now but during non commute hours its doable.

We also take a different route which is all 4 lane with 55-65 speeds to totally bypass ALL the Atlanta congestion. As an alternative for a more peaceful, scenic and relaxing pace get off I75 on GA 53 in Calhoun south of Chattanooga. Go west to Rome and take the east bypass around Rome to US 27 south to LaGrange. At LaGrange catch I-185 south to Columbus, then the GA 520 SE through Ft Benning (it become US 82 at Dawson ) then take GA520/US82 to Tifton and get back on I-75. All good road . A few towns and plenty to see and do but no traffic . Not that much longer time wise and a reasonable pathway-- especially if you hit ATL when its a parking lot.
