Considering this route northbound from Vernal to Rock Springs, but Mt Directory West makes it sound pretty scary in spots. We'd be pulling our TT (rig described in sig). Anyone have experience with this route who could help us with our decision? TIA!

No problem, made same trip last June/July. Recommend Skull Creek Campground near the Gorge. Small & quiet. Was able to fit our 36' Class A into a site all the way to the rear of the CG that allowed us full use of our solar, sat TV & ATT service. Great location central to daytrips in Flaming Gorge. Continued on Northward without any issues. One of our best stops on the trip.
Thanks for the correction. I didn't watch it. We've stayed at Steinaker State Park and also at the top overlooking Flaming Gorge at Firefighter's Memorial campground - nice big sites - national forest - 1/2 price with Senior Pass.
The switchbacks are not tight at all, no worries about that. There is a bit of a downhill to the dam, just keep it slow. Make sure to stop at the Red Canyon visitors center at the top just off of 191 a few miles. Absolutely stunning views. We loved that whole area when visiting last summer.
We have driven that route in both directions numerous times. There are ten switchbacks in 9 miles just North of Vernal. In my opinion, going North (uphill) is not that difficult. The Southbound decent into Vernal is the potential problem causer. Once you reach the dam, you can go on the East side or the West side of the Lake. The road conditions seem to vary year to year with one route being better than the other. I don't think there is a big difference between the grades of one route over the other.
Good to know, all. Thanks! Old Biscuit, c'mon now. 😉 Our Tundra does just fine. Tight turns worry me more than steep drops, unless the road is less than 2 full lanes wide.

It's a pretty good climb for about 4-5 miles after you leave Vernal, but just take your time and you shouldn't have any problems; traffic is pretty light and the road is in fine condition. You will really like the Flaming Gorge area, make sure you go out to the overlook, an impressive view.
