What about in winter? We leave from Spokane wa., but worried about passes and snow in January. Any recommendations?

We drove up from Southern Calif to Washington a couple of times and as I hate I5 we did a couple routes. The first one, we took 197 south to Bend and then cut over to 395 on Hwy 20. Talk about a lonely road. LOL
We stayed on 395 until we got into Nevada and then took 95 South thru Nevada, another lonely road.

Another time we took 84 to Hwy Hwy 93. Going thru Boise was horrid because they were having road construction but I understand there is a way to avoid that. Las Vegas wasn't a lot of fun either because we picked a heavy traffic time, but both routes fine.

Assuming you're leaving from Oregon City in Sept/Oct, we would take OR26 to OR97 to OR31 to 395. 395 is an absolutely gorgeous route for fall color. Continue on 395 to Barstow, CA and pick up I-40 east to AZ95 south to Yuma

When we came home this spring we took the 93 route so we could avoid SLC, much nicer route. We also bypassed Butte,Montana further down the road. It was a much nicer drive home than going down. Suggested to hubby that we take this route when we head south this winter but he's not sure how that route would be at New Years.

From Las Vegas I take US 93 to Kingman then Arizona 95 through Lake Havasu then Quartzsite then US 95 to Yuma. But I recommend to anyone that asks to go south from Las Vegas on US 95. That way there will be less traffic on my route.

I-84 from Oregon City to Twin Falls ID...... 93 south to Ely NV....6 to 318 south (becomes 93 again).... 93/I-15 Through Las Vegas to 95 south (CA)..... 62 east to Parker AZ.....95 south (AZ) to Yuma....

Not a very scenic route for sure, but Vegas will be the only real city traffic on the entire route....keep your fuel topped up as some long stretches between stations after Twin Falls....

We like the more scenic route....97 thru Klamath Falls, then south on 39/139/299 to Alturas, then 395 thru Susanville, thru Reno, down the eastern side of the Sierras to I-15, I-215, I-210, I-10 to Indio and S-86 to the new cutoff around Brawley (78/111) to I-8 into Yuma....about 19 hours drive time.
