I am planning a trip to Memphis and would like to see Graceland and St Jude Hospital. After that I am open to ideas on campgrounds, places to eat and things to do while in the area.

no shortage of good bbq in memphis....I would recommend the rendevous and maybe a stop by the peabody hotel for the duck march.

The Rendevous is where the tourists eat and is overpriced. You an argue all day about BBQ in Memphis but many locals enjoy Central BBQ or the BBQ shop.

Gibson Factory and the Civil Rights Museum are interesting. We thought Sun Studio tour was not much - you look at the room and a gift shop. Mud Island Museum is also good - it has an outdoor replication of the Mississippi River.

Tom Saywer RV Park gets great reviews. Another option in Northern MS is Hernando Point COE campground.

Enjoy your visit!

many of the locals also eat at Denny's but that doesn't mean I would recommend everyone go there. You go for the experience as much as the food. First time visitor to memphis there's a handful of things you should do and one of those IMO is to go eat at the rendevous.

When you are looking for the Rendezvous, yes the entrance is in an alley and you walk right past the trash dumpsters. Adds to the experience, but the ribs are great.

An RV Park to consider is Tom Sawyer. It is in West Memphis so you will have to drive to the Memphis attractions. Check with the park however before driving there. It is located right on the banks and I mean "right on" the Mississippi River and if the river is high it is under water. It is a great spot for barge/tug watching since they go right by your site.

X2 on Tom Sawyer CG great place to stay right on the mighty Missisp.

Do Check their website 'first' though. They will have their Mississippi River levels alert on the home page if they are underwater!

P.S. Stay WAY WAY away from the town of West Memphis. :W

glad you added that in there........don't want to get lost in West Memphis on a Saturday night.

I got to see it first hand when I followed my GPS directions to the CG instead of the CG's website directions. Just glad to be here and able to talk about it! :W

Tunica isn't that far from there either if you get the gambling bug and want to go to the river boats to lose a little money. ๐Ÿ˜„

Go for the ribs at the Rendevous Restaurant, down the alley from the Peabody hotel. See if you can get a tour of the upstairs memorabilia. The who's who of people that have dined there goes from presidents to the Rolling Stones.

And the Gibson Guitar factory tour is pretty interesting. The National Civil Rights Museum is a good stop too. The W C Handy, father of the blues home/museum is just off the end of Beale Street. The duck walk at the Peabody was a hoot to watch.

Didn't eat at the Rendezvous though highly recommended I couldn't bring myself to eat BBQ in a restaurant with white tablecloths. Did eat at Blues City Cafe at 2nd & Beale and the ribs were great!

Once in downtown look for folks wearing safari helmets and carrying satchels. Go speak to them and they will have lots of info about local places to visit or eat. The satchels are filled with brochures and some are helpful. They put us onto the free shuttle that took us to Graceland and back into town for Sun Studios tour.

Enjoy

While downtown go by the Peabody Hotel. They are known for the ducks that they keep on the roof and have a big ceremony every morning when they bring them down to the lobby to spend the day in the fountain. You can call for the time. Also go by the Rendezvous Restaurant which is downtown. They are known around the world for their dry rubbed ribs. Not my favorite but they are a big deal and it is a unique place. A trip out to Mud Island which is in the Mississippi River also used to be pretty interesting. Have fun.
