Beach State Parks in South Carolina?

Hey everybody

Looking for info on any of these campgrounds:

Edisto Beach SP
Myrtle Beach SP
Hunting Island SP
Huntington Beach SP

Basically just wondering about any tips, preferred sites, etc. I know there are tons of private CGs in the Myrtle Beach area but we're looking for something mellower, just 2 adults no kids, small popup TC and small budget.

Unfortunately our timeframe is mid-April which coincides with Spring Break so a lot of the sites are already booked. Myrtle Beach SP has the most still available though looking at pics they seem really close together?

We will probably be coming down through Western NC and thinking about staying at either Hamilton Branch SP or Calhoun SP on the way there. We don't need hookups so boon docking would be fine too.

We've been through Savannah and Pawleys Island before but this would be our first trip down there with the camper. Any advice is much appreciated!

Hunting Island is, by far, our favorite. It is not easy to get a site there during spring, summer or fall and that should tell you something.

If you can get a site, our favorite is #64 or any of the sites within the same loop. If those aren't available, our next choice is #91.

During the spring, the weather may be warm enough to lay on the beach or may not, shorts might be fine or you may have to wear pants...it's just a toss-up.

We just don't like to go to the beach where you have to stake out a 5'x5' space to put your blanket down. I want peace and quiet and not lots and lots of people.

The other places are just too crowded for me.

Edisto is our 2nd favorite spot. Myrtle Beach is not even on our radar and someone would have to pay me LOTS of money to go there willingly.

We do enjoy James Island County Park, outside of Charleston and Folly Beach.

HBSP is great especially if no need for full hookups. They have some but are booked way in advance. It is our second most favorite. Close to good food and enough fun things to do. Our first choice is Hunting Island. Less options for food and shopping but great beach. Edisto has two campgrounds one on or near the beach and the other just a little ways away. I have only driven through MBSP but it looks nice.
Personally I would avoid the commercial campgrounds but that's just me.

just left Lakewood....we are not fans of state parks....I prefer having full hookups and an indoor pool. We paid 3 bucks a night more at Lakewood then then Huntington beach full hookup would have been....and no pool hot tub or activities.

Like you, we are fans of the state parks. Our favorite is Huntington Beach SP. Since you're limited by your time frame and reservations are disappearing quickly go ahead and reserve at whichever one you can get: the SPs are all better and all are good for your goals.

They are all very nice. But I like Edisto the best if you get by the beach.

Edisto is VERY nice. Has sites just across the dunes, and a pier. However there are 2 section of the park. AS I say one on the beach, and one a 1/2 mile or so back. You don't want to be back there.

Word to the wise. Edisto is a lightly developed area, Not a lot of stores. Does have Piggly Wiggly. So take what you need

We have stayed at Huntington Beach a couple of times. The campground sites are just off the beach which gives you some privacy and not have to have the beach crowd strolling though the camp site at all hours of the night. The beach is just a short walk away from the camp site.

We like the shaded sites the best.

Hunting Island is on our list to visit soon.

For a quiet experience that is still accessible to MB sights, try Huntington Beach SP, which is south of MB and away from the spring break opportunities. The Huntington couple consisted of the heir to a large fortune and his artist wife. The very interesting ruins of their spanish style home are in the SP, although their is a small extra charge for touring (highly recommend).

Across the highway is the Brookgreen Gardens, which displays artwork by the wife and others in a primarily outdoor setting. There are also tours by boat of the rice fields that were established prior to the Civil War and purchased by the Huntingtons to create the gardens.

I agree that MB SP can have rather small sites, especially around the entry area. This park has lots of sites though and some that are in the back portion are larger and more private. Lots of "breakers" may be there though. Closer to city, has a fishing pier, long beach walks but with noise from airport and AF base.

Ocean Lakes in MB is very nice, not cheap, but nice. Lots of amenities and features. We have stayed there 4 or 5 times now and our daughter thinks it is the best CG we have ever stayed at. Maybe she is just spoiled......
