Just returned from a quick 4 day run up to Dead Horse ranch SP in Cottonwood Arizona. Hard to find a nicer Arizona State park with more to see and do in the immediate vicinity. The $30 pull through site was large, paved and dead level with 30/50 amps, water, immaculate restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers along with a nice two lane dump station on the way out.
We towed my Harley Super Glide {my favorite Toad}, behind our 24' Class C and took full advantage. Rode up to Sedona on Wednesday morning for breakfast and then continued up Oak Creek Canyon. The lower portion of the road is in poor repair with many potholes but gets better the further north you go. At the north end of the Canyon there are several sections of serious road construction/destruction and you can expect to sit for 10 to 15 minutes awaiting the pilot car. Several miles of gravel/mud covered road followed and since it had snowed heavily on Tuesday night in Flagstaff we found the temps as low as 38... not much fun on a bike. we retreated down I-17 and rode back into Sedona from the south.
Mid week the CG was about half full with lots of pull throughs available but reservations are always a good idea. The CG is huge with, several large ponds/lagoons, with reportedly good fishing and the Verde River runs right through the property with lots of hiking trails.
There is a very nice equestrian facility on site and we enjoyed a beautiful hour long trail ride {a reasonable $65 a piece}, on Thursday morning. It was just my bride and I and our trusty wrangler "JJ" who led us through the dense woods, twice across the Verde River, up and over the the hills and back to the corral.
We followed this adventure with a stop in old Cottonwood for some shopping and then rode up to Jerome for a fun/delicious lunch at the Haunted Hamburger with a view that just does not quit from a mile up above the Verde Valley. Jerome is a must see but leave you RV back at the site. The road to and through Jerome is no place for any RV much over 24' but it was a blast on the Harley and most Toads will do fine.
It's only 217 miles from our driveway to DHR SP and by missing the morning commute negotiating Phoenix was a piece of cake. Can't wait to get back but be advised Cottonwood and the surrounding areas get very hot during the summer months. we will be back but probably not until October... your call.
