Defacing National Parks

I remember about a year ago reading about a young woman that visited and defaced several of our National Parks with her so-called art work. I think her name was Casey Nockett.

Anyway, I haven't heard anything about it in almost a year. Supposedly, the NPS was going to track her down and charge her with several felonies. Has anyone heard if the NPS ever did anything about this vandalism in the parks?

I'm hoping so, but I can't find any related stories about it...Don

It's not generational. People have been marking trees, rocks, etc., forever. Regardless of whose property it's on. People have been taking home "souvenirs" of rocks, petrified wood, etc., forever.

Laws about it have been made because it's been a problem for a long time and has been shown to destroy the value of the parks - not because this generation has no respect.
Very true, there are places where members of the Roman legions carved their names into and onto cave and building walls. Ramses II had his cartouche carved into columns and buildings over older carvings.

Don't take the above statement as tacit approval of what that person has done. I hate graffiti in almost all places, but especially on places that are still pristine.

I was in Yellowstone Nat'l Park in the late 70's and watched a trailer stop at a turnoff, and a woman got out, broke off a large piece of calcite, this was near some hot springs, and hopped back into the vehicle and away they went. I was stunned.

It is truly a sad thing to see such disrespect for our National Treasures. Nearly as bad is all the litter people leave behind. Two springs ago we were visiting the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in SW Oklahoma. While there a large group of about 30 people showed up. They were loud, played very loud music and even invaded the picnic spots of others including ours by kids running around and asking for handouts of soft drinks and such. When their outing was over and they left the area, they left all (and I mean All) of their trash on the ground and on the tables. Trash receptacles were within 20'. It was the worse mess I have ever witnessed in such a setting. I thought about that television commercial from the 70's where the Indian looked at all the litter and a tear ran down his cheek. I reckon that image came to me because it was a Native American church group. Please don't label me as racist. That I am not! Just sharing the truth of what I saw.

It absolutely amazes me that someone would use this as a comparison to justify such irresponsible actions.

In August 2013, we went out to New Mexico for a visit, and made a day trip over to Petrified Forest National Park. I had been there in November 1982.

My wife (it was her first visit to the park) asked me why I was crying as we made our way around one of the popular loop trails. Because I was absolutely shocked at how much petrified wood had been removed from the area. I could see the ghost of what it had looked like in my mind, and what my wife though was amazing and beautiful was only a hollow shell of what was there 30 years ago.

Actress Vanessa Hudgens is now in trouble for defacing Sedona red rocks. She and her bf carved their initials inside a heart on a rock. I am totally mind-boggled that ANYONE feels they have a right to destroy nature.

If the "taggers" were forced to remove the graffiti with a tooth brush or face jail time, the word would get out. Those are "our" parks.

Sorry, I do lose track of time. Have you heard if NPS ever filed any charges against her?
