For Those With Only Summer To Travel

We do the majority of our rving June to August when our grandson is out of school so he can take a long trip with us. Any of you follow the same pattern? If so where are you planning to go next summer? We've been to every state in lower 48 (Canada twice) so we're looking for places we haven't been yet that a 12 yr old boy would appreciate. This summer we went to Yellowstone (3rd time) and the boy wants to go back next summer but I told him we could come up with somewhere new so I ask for your opinions.

MPond, how are you today. I am jumping here after reading a few (Not all) of the posts. We liked Glacier NP but we seemed to loose interest in the park very fast, It is a beautiful park and everyone should go there at least one time, The drive and view is "OFF THE HOOK", but we ran out of things that we wanted to do.

In Yellowstone there are so many hikes, trails, views and things to do that we just keep going back every few years. It is ever changing and just seems to draw us back over and over. For me it was being there with my mother, father and brothers in the 60's and 70's. I have pictures of my dad, my brothers and I fishing from Fishing Bridge, it is illegal now. Seeing the park prior to the fires and seeing the park heal its self and the carpet of Pinon Pines and young plant life.

Now with my wife and daughters we try to go every two to four years. The drive out is as much fun as our stay in Yellowstone. We leave California and head to Las Vegas and stay in the Oasis R.V. park and let the kids enjoy the sand beach pools there. Then a short few hour drive to the Cedar City, Utah KOA. A pull thru site for the night and a dip in their pool to rid us of the desert heat. From their, with an early start (On the road by 830), it on to the Pocatello Idaho WallMart and get all our shopping needs for our time in the park. Then we finish the days drive in West Yellowstone, Mt. KOA. We have our campfires and outdoor cooking at these locations.

A few days there seeing the sights of West Yellowstone and the west side of the park then on to Fishing Bridge Campground. The best spot in the park (JMHO) to make a base-camp but no camp fires.

Arrive in the spring or early summer and you will see the animals fresh out of a long winter. You can see the Trout Spawn and so much more. Later in summer and fall you will see the animals getting ready for another long winter. The Deer and Elk go into Rut. You can hear and see the Elk Bugle and try to gather up a harem.

Just too much to list. And as you can see, it is easy to get carried away telling someone why Yellowstone is better then many other places and parks.

Look, two other posters said they liked Glacier over Yellowstone. Now I'm saying I prefer Yellowstone over Glacier. I'm not trying to be helpful; just expressing my opinion like the others. You all go to Glacier and I'll go to Yellowstone; OK? Remember who started the thread? Never been to Glacier and haven't been to Y'stone since a child and I'm not helpful. :R

We keep going back to Yellowstone as it seems to draw us back time and time again. We just got back from Alaska Saturday and I'm planning our next trip to be made very soon.

Try door county WI magazines call it the Martha's vineyard of the midwest. Great food excellent white sand beaches all the water sports you can imagine. 8 different lighthouses and the sightseeing is great. Once you are north of Sturgeon bay there are no more chain stores of any kind. Only mom and pop and the fish boils are a ball but best of all are the people. We have been to Mexico and the Virgin islands. The Rockies and Smokies Mnts. Vegas and New Orleans, but we always return to the Door. This time will be the fourth we go in early August.

Follow the Lewis and Clark Trail and involve him in the planning of where to stop. Do some kayaking on the waterways.

At Pompeys Pillar you could drop down into Yellowstone for a side trip on the way back from Oregon.

Gas must be high where we live because we were there a couple years ago and I remember it not being too much higher than where we live. Within 20-30 cents a gallon.

Just looked for Los Angeles and it's about 30 cents more a gallon there than here. (3.73 there and 3.43 by my house) Not too bad I think. I always estimate $4/gallon whenever planning an RV trip. Kind of balances out for high in some places and low in others.

I considered Cali but gas is so high out west I pretty much wrote it off. Besides we went to Yosemite and up the Cali coast to Washington and Calgary about 3 yrs ago.

How about the west coast. There is a lot to do & see...disneyland, Lego land, sea world, San Diego zoo & the Ocean. Maybe a baseball game too. California has a lot to offer besides just the obvious.

I agree! Take him into Hollywood and the Santa Monica Pier. If you plan the dates right, you might be able to get them in to see a taping of one of their favorite tv shows. You can also stop by the Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam on your way there.
