info on Apalachicola

Taking the truck camper to Apalachicola, Fl next week to sample some gulf seafood. Would appreciate any info, recomendations on local campgrounds and other attractions.

St George Island is the closest, beware tho, the mosquitos are bad. Then St. Joseph Peninsula State Park would be my choice.

We like our oysters especially the Chincoteague, VA kind but I must admit the oysters at Joe's Oyster Bar and Boss Oyster Co. were almost as good. Even better if you buy them by the pint in Eastport. Enjoy.

You cannot camp at St. Vincent Island. It is only accessible by boat and is a day use area. St George Island SP has a campground and so does St. Joseph Peninsula SP. There are three new resort type CG's on US 98 between Eastpoint and Carabelle and there are lots of CG's in the Apalachiacola National Forest and Tate's Hell State Forest. That area is a campers heaven. lizzie

St George Island SP is pretty much it. Some nice shelling along the beach there. St Joseph Island SP is further away (PT ST Joe area) but much prettier and worth it if you don't mind driving a ways to Apalachicola.

We've stayed at Ho-Hum on the waterfront in Caravelle and liked it. Prices much lower than Florida Keys, as I recall.

We had lunch at the Owl Cafe in Apalachicola and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere - nicer than our usual camping joints but not at all stuffy.

St. George is about it. There are a couple of CGs farther east near Carrabelle but they want resort prices.

It's been said that boondocking is available under the bridge but last I saw it was more expensive than St. George SP.

But since you're doing it:

Drive down to the St. Marks lighthouse. There's no camping but it's worth the trip if you're an outdoorsy type. There's a CG at the bridge across the St. Marks River at Newport; I understand the price may not be justified. I haven't been there for several years. Supposedly there's a CG at a fish camp down at St. Marks. Definitely do the boat tour at Wakulla Springs SP. Have dinner at the Spring Creek Restaurant at Spring Creek. St. George Island SP is nice. It is quiet, away from the noise and traffic, and has some pristine beaches. The town of St. George's Island is small but they have a couple of really good oyster shacks.
