Movin around SC & GA Coast - experiences

Planning on a trip from just north of Charleston to just south of Savanah...in Jan/Feb Looking at the following parks, which are don't miss and which are don't stop?
Buck Hall-Frances Marion National Forest SC
Mt Pleasent KOA - Mt Pleasent SC
James Island County Park - Charleston SC
Edisto Beach State Park - Edisto Beach SC
Hilton Head RV Resort & Marina - HH SC
Red Gate Farm - Savanah GA
Skidway Island State Pk - Savanah GA
Blyth Island Regional Park - Brunswick GA
Santee State Park - Santee SC
Open to other suggestions in this area, idea was to hug the coast.

Adding some comments for the benefit of future Hunting Island State Park visitors. The back loop, 156-200 is very difficult for large equipment. Last week we stayed in spot 157; we loved the park but this space was challenging. Looking at the spot from the road, it was completely unclear where the desired spot was! Imagine a stubby legged octopus with a power stand for a head... no arm was quite long enough for our our 24ft trailer, or if if was appropriate there was always a palm tree or a pine in just the wrong place. It took us 3 laps and over an hour to get situated into our spot (we ended up just paralleling the road). It took nearly 2 hours for our neighbors in 197 to get their 5th wheel parked and required the neighbor to move their Jeep by nearly 10 ft (in their own space).

Once you get there, low tide is amazing... tide pools and MILES of sand to explore. We saw crabs, fish, dolphins, birds, you name it. The nature center was lovely. If you feel inclined to go out for dinner, the Foolish Frog in Lady's Island served a mean Shrimp & Grits and ribs were good too.

Be SURE TO TAKE THE 21 Bypass. Our GPS in the Tahoe took us on 21 Business which involved downtown Beaufort and a 3-axle restricted bridge.

Overall a great State Park with some freakishly challenging spots... if it says severe grade, it IS SEVERE. 🙂

We had a great time at the Mount Pleasant KOA in March, albeit the weather was a bit chillier than we'd have liked. Nice campground, nice staff, and the sites were well maintained and didn't feel badly crowded together. We didn't use it, but they did have an air supported cover over the pool, making it available for year round use. The location is very quiet with a rural feel, although many major stores are just a few blocks away.

We enjoyed Skidaway and would recommend it. We stayed at the campground on Jekyll Island and loved it. It is crowded but we like staying on the island. However, it will be difficult to get reservations during the winter due to Snowbirds. The last time we were there we got the last available site.

Possibly. That part of Georgia rarely freezes long enough to kill ticks and fleas. Mosquitos may not be too bad, but ticks are active year round

The only real amenity is a pool and in Jan/Feb I don't think anyone is using it. Blythe Island Regional Park, about 4 miles away from Coastal GA RV Resort offers hiking and biking trails, a lake and river for fishing, boat ramp & boat launch and its only $28 for FHU & Wifi.

I live about 1/2 mile from Coastal GA RV Resort and the school. During the school year, I hear the kids playing at recess all day long when I'm outside. I95 traffic can be heard as well as the lazy truckers using their jake brakes to get from the I-95 off-ramp to the Flying J.

I'm not putting Coastal GA RV Resort down, it's definitely a nice campground, but in my opinion it's a little pricey compared to the competition.

Poinsett isn't likely to be an option at 40ft 5er. I used to do it in my 34ft 5er, and even that was tight. Which is a shame, because it was one of our favorites!

Buck Hall NFS Campground is nice, large sites some trees....but a long way from the sights of Charleston. Mt Pleasant KOA is the Best KOA I have been too. James Island really nice too. (My daughters used to live Charleston, and that gave me an excuse to be there often.

Yes - my son's scout troop went down there Feb last year. I warned him about the ticks before he went. He was the only one (adults included) that didn't get any. Mind you, they were in tents and may have been in the woodsy areas more than you will.

Santee is easy from I-95. There is a gem of a state park called Poinsett further north, but about 30 minutes off of 95. Not much traffic through it - get everything you need before you head there, as it is out in the middle of nowhere.

We enjoy Santee. The sites next to the office are for the most part larger.

Santee State Park is not on the coast - it's over an hour inland from Charleston. It is on Lake Marion.
Hunting Island is great - but full of ticks. Just make sure you keep an eye out and remove them as soon as possible.

I would imagine you might need the HD Off in Jan/Feb... I was at Glynco (Brunswick area) for some training years ago in that time fram and the sand gnats were terrible.
