Northern Michigan RV trip

Planning our first RV trip to northern Michigan next year from Louisiana. (late May..early June) Anyone have suggestions on RV parks, routes, etc. around Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, (possibly at Munising) then on to Mackinac Island area, then down to Traverse City. Planning to spend several days in each those areas and want to make the best of it. I'm all about the scenery and RV parks that provide full hookups. Pulling 33' Cardinal 5th wheel. Appreciate all advice and suggestions.

Bring lots of bug spray. Black flies will bite and then carry you away.

We did this trip at the end of July. Bugs were not a problem. Weather was nice but cool. I wore jeans all week. We liked Munising Tourist Park. I wish they didn't have so many lights at night. We did the Pictured Rock boat tour. Sit on the right side so you see the rocks going out. The falls tour uses the Catamaran, larger nice boat. We stayed at Indigo Bluffs. The RV park side is really nice but very pricey. The campground is nice but most sites are sandy and four sites share utilty post with 4 water/power. Bring extra hose and power cord for this trip! There are web sites to monitor favorable conditions for northern lights. Have fun planning!

We are looking at Indigo Bluffs for 2019 mid-July. We are concerned at the CG side but should be doable but may splurge and stay on the RV side - live it up a little.
Thanks for your experience and will look at the tours.

Agree with recommendation for Munising Tourist Park CG. We also like the Bay Mills Casino RV Park in Brimley - does has FHU sites.

The original post is from five years ago...Sept 2013...

Nice to see some of the suggestions, though, for those of us who are currently planning Michigan trips...

Whoa! 2013? I need to read more closely. I think he made his trip already. ๐Ÿ™‚

late May/early June is about the worse time for bugs in the UP. Better off delaying a month.

On your way up if you take I-75 stop in Frankenmuth. Go to Zender's bakery for some wonderful goodies. Great place for lunch too, or a good chicken dinner if you stay in the area. Campgrounds close by too. Traverse City, rethinking staying outside the area is good. Its just a big city today. The Leelanau Peninsula is a better choice plus you are in Michigan wine country. A few nice CG's there too. Stay in an area a few days at a time and use it as a base, there is plenty to see. The ship wreck museum at Whitefish Point is not to be missed. Mackinac Island is unique.

Don't forget the beautiful waterfalls scattered all over the UP. We had a book of county maps that had them marked. We stayed in Munising for a week and did day trips from there to see many of them. Next time we stayed 3 weeks before going back to Grand Rapids where we lived. Never enough time in the U.P.
