Planning to go to Chadron State Park in Nebraska, then up to S. Dakota to see Wind Cave, Custer State Park and Mr Rushmore mid May. Any idea how the temps and weather might be? It will be our first time in the area. Thanks in advance.

Which park would be best for about a 4 or 5 day stay? Ft Robinson or Chadron? To be honest, we are thinking about leaving the camper at home and staying in state park cabins as much as possible this trip or motel if no cabins available. Shorter amount of time for the trip as we can travel more miles per day. Lots of the parks we are looking at have cabins at reasonable rates so we can cook and save on food expense. Biggest problem is choosing where to go. The more we research the more we want to see! For us the journey will be the primary goal rather than one destination.

Chadron State Park in Nebraska has a pool. Another place to visit is Ft. Robinson State Park at Crawford, NE. Lots of history and scenic drive in the Pine Ridge.

I like that.:B But snow in mid-May would be quite unusual. I've lived just west of the Black Hills for 40+ years and can't remember a mid-May snowstorm east of the Bighorns. Chilly, wet, windy, yes, but can't recall any snow to speak of. You'll find most commercial tourist attractions closed until Memorial Day, but the caves and other gov't attractions will all be open.

SD state parks do not have swimming pools. Power only.
May is a challenging month in the Black Hills. Snow or 80 degree weather can happen any day, even 1 day after another. The Hills are in a 'convergence zone' of weather systems with May being the most fickle month. Come, but be prepared, flip flops to boots.

It's a bit early to be sure of warm weather, the Weather underground is always a good source of historical weather info:
