Outer Banks or Virginia Beach?

My wife and I are planning on getting away for a week or so after Labor Day, and were thinking either Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks. We are just looking for some relaxing time along the ocean, preferably not a place that is too busy, that is why we chose to travel after Labor Day. We will be traveling from NY. Any suggestions either way on each, and also campgrounds?

So I came here looking for info on campgrounds, and get stuck listening to people opinions about what is waste and not..

We have been to Camp Hatteras several times. Stayed on Soundside and Oceanside. Probably going to stay Oceanside next spring break.

You're correct. My bad.

I would rather stay away from the Outer Banks. First there is no place called the Outer Banks on any Map in the world. Second, a lot of ships sank on the outer banks. LOL Fighters are the sound of FREEDOM! There are a lot of places to RV in the Norfolk area that are quiet.
Fighters are the sound of our tax dollars being wasted at a rate of some ungodly amount nobody is paying attention to. http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-shows-hourly-cost-of-military-aircraft-2014-12

I would think they are mistaken and mean Camp Hatteras. The sound side was quite a bit quieter when we stayed there.

Ocean Waves. We stayed one night on the ocean side and the next on the sound side. We actually liked the sound side better. Also check out Stingwray's bar/restaurant just north of the campground.

Just got back from OBX. Its a long ride for me from Boston, but always worth it. They have the best beaches. You will find it peaceful down in the Rodanthe area. Best of luck.

We make it to the east coast every couple of years.

We stayed this spring at First Landing State Park. A nice park with a nice beach. We thought it was a good place to get away, yet it was close to action.

We then went to Oregon Inlet, on the Outer Banks, a good choice. Spent a few days. Nice and good beach experience, just over the dunes. Access to the Wright Memorial and Nags head and there quite a few people in the area. We like this area.

Next we went to Ocracoke, This is about as remote as it gets, probably the best beach experience, its a nice place to get away. There are fewer people, but its a ways down the coast. We enjoy a visit to the docks, good dockside restaurant and good sea food stores to get fish to cook at camp. If the decoy shop is open a very interesting visit.

When we go again we will probably visit Ocracoke again, probably as the north end of a trip.

Good Luck.

Rick.

The sound side of Ocean Waves is what you want..the rates also drop after Labor Day....if you wish to stay in the middle of the banks, OBX Campground is good...or if you have a toad and don't mind a 5 minute ride to the beach...The Refuse at Manteo is also good...Ocean Waves is about 20 miles down the road from Nags Head..

AS mentioned First Landing State Park has abay beach and you can get a site in the dunes.
Bay beach is not quite as nice as a real ocean beach. But there is plenty of sand some small waves and it's all right there in the CG.

Quiet and relaxing I would go for obx. Even in the summer I don't mind towing the tt through there. After labor day would be cake. Assateague or Chincoteague would be decent alternatives as well. They can be done in a relatively easy days drive from NY.
