Hello all!

Last year we had an amazing trip through the southern United States. Our goal was to have us travel all the continental states in these two years. We plan on being gone from May 1st to September 30th. We travel in a 35 feet Class B+ BT Cruiser with a Chevy HHR for a toad. We will be traveling from Washington State through Oregon, Idaho and Utah.

Then we think we are going east on Highway 40 to Denver then Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and on to Tennessee. We try to travel no more than 300 miles a day and prefer a lot less. From there we head on to Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania Maryland and West Virginia. Then we meander down through Virginia and North Carolina.

We like to stay off the freeways and see the land. From there we head up the eastern seaboard to Washington DC, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and in to Canada. Yes Quebec, Montreal then down to New York. We will mosey over to Buffalo and back across the border to Toronto and up to Sault Ste. Marie then down through Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. We then head west through Dakotas, Montana, Idaho and back home.

What we would like to ask of you is favorite sites for us to see. Places you like to camp. What you all would recommend. Please help fill our itinerary!

You must have already been in Wyoming as it appears you are planning on by-passing us. However, if you change your mind, it's pretty easy to get here from Idaho or Colorado and take in the Snowy Range, up to Grand Teton, Yellowstone and then over Chief Joseph Highway, over to Cody and then to the Black Hills after going through Wind River Canyon and traveling the longest 1,000 miles on earth between Shoshoni and Casper (distance 96 miles). On your way to the Black Hills you can take a look at the Devil's Tower.

In Arkansas, stay at Petit Jean State Park and take time to explore the trails and scenic lookouts.

Wow, that is quite a meandering path! Sounds like an AMAZING trip and a good amount of time to make the trip. I hope you have an awesome time and you write a blog or a post detailing your trip as you go.

Dave and Sue, the first time I saw the ball of twine that I remember was in 1962! It was in a guy's yard! My father never stopped the car for anything in those trips so it was amazing when he stopped! He said on our previous vacation, 1959, he had talked to the guy who had started it. my husband has never seen this! Thanks for reminding me! If I remember right it was in a Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Looks like you'll be in Michigan in the UP when you visit Sault Ste Marie?

I agree with the previous poster to take a day to visit Mackinac Island. You take a ferry over from St. Ignace. You can get a package deal that includes prices for the ferry to/from the island, self guided tour of Fort Mackinac, and a horse drawn wagon ride around the entire island. This is my preferred way to see the island. You can also rent bikes, but be cautioned that it's very hilly!

There are tons of threads here on the UP, but I'd recommend you visit the Soo locks, WhiteFish Point (beach, lighthouse tours and museum) on Lake Superior, Tahquamenon Falls, and stop in Munising for a tour of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. See this from the water on a boat tour. It's beautiful.

In Maine a must is Acadia Nat. Park. In NH the White Mountains, in DC the Smithsonian, in CT. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium, in Mass. Cape Cod and around Boston. In NC. Nashville is beautiful go up the Blue Ridge Parkway into and through Virginia. There so much more too

Connecticut - probably want to check out Mystic Seaport and Gillete Castle State Park. Could stay at Hammonassette State Park if you are okay with no hookups. Plenty of campgrounds mostly in the eastern part of the state.

I'll chime in for Nebraska. HWY 2 between Alliance and Grand Island is a great alternative to I-80 if you have the time. I rode it on my Goldwing and it was very scenic. Watch out for those turtles!

Wow, it's hard to know where to begin listing favorite sights and campgrounds for such an enormous territory.

Four months doesn't really give you time to linger, so sounds like you need a few highlights in each of the states mentioned.

For example, Maine and Canada's Maritime provinces could fill a summer, but highlights for me were coastal lighthouses, Acadia National Park, Campbello Island, and Cape Breton Island with the Cabot Trail and the Fortress of Louisbourg.

You mentioned Utah...maybe you have already done this on your southern route, but if not, you coud at least get an overview of the Four Corners region and National Parks of the Southwest - Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Arches, Mesa Verde, and more.
