Southwest Colorado in mid May

Thinking about a trip to El Paso TX to visit family and then possibly on to the Grand Canyon the first part of May. Looking at heading to the Durango Silverton Ouray area on the way home. Was there 9 years ago in August and would like to go back. I am aware of US 550 million dollar highway and what has been said about it. I am more interested in the weather and if mid May is to early. At that time of year the weather is probably unpredictable. We like to take the jeep trails and do short day hikes. It looks like Colorado's snow pack this year is below average. When do the the jeep trails open? I am guessing it is to early for wild flowers? Would it be better to wait to go in June/July for the flowers or September or October for fall colors.

We were at the GC North Rim and then up to southern Utah last May/June and will be returning to the area in the same timeframe this year. Lots of great short hikes and awesome backroad and 4WD trails. Let me know if you'll get that far north and I can provide specifics.

I see you're from KY so I'll throw out a couple of other ideas for travelling west from eastern US (we're in northeastern NC). Palo Duro Canyon SP - Amarillo, TX. Dog Canyon Campground in Guadalupe Mountain NP - Carlsbad, NM or Brantley Lake SP for hookups. Big Bend is our favorite NP and Big Bend Ranch SP is next door with great jeep trails (3 hrs southeast of El Paso). Safe travels.

Jeeping the Alpine Trails of Silverton/Lake City typically begins June 1 for most of the trails and ends mid-Sept for most of the trails. Naturally, weather isn't predictable.

The gorgeous meadow flowers out of Silverton are best the ending of June and July.

The Durango/Silverton train runs May 5 to Oct 11.

July 4 is an awesome time to be in Silverton. The parade is fun and the fireworks awesome... one of the best we've seen anywhere.

Thanks for the replies. Will probably move the northern part of the trip to another trip in September.

Glad the OP asked.

Spent the month of April in Colorado City Co once and other than one big snowstorm that put a foot of snow on the roof, the weather was pretty nice. But I think it's a little higher elevation than Durango...?

I was planning a change of scenery to Durango area in mid April; sounds like I may have to rethink things based on some of the answers here.

Edit: Just checked city data website; apparently Colorado City is a lower elevation (500ft) than Durango.

If you have a choice between mid-May, June/July and September/October, if it were me, I'd opt for September/October, and more specifically, September after Labor Day. In fact, I was down that way this past October in Durango, enroute to the Grand Canyon (both rims), and stopped at Mesa Verde NP on the way back. The weather was cooperative (warm days/crisp nights), the colours were magnificent (were peaking the last week of September/first week of October depending on elevation), and the crowds were considerably less, with most places still open.

Even though the current snow pack is down, keep in mind that March and April are the snowiest months here and snow into May is not uncommon. Most USFS CGs don't open until late May or after Memorial Day. Many Jeep trails at high elevation will still have some snow cover on them, or mud season will be prevalent, and it's no fun to get stuck in mud. Many hiking trails in the forests will still have a lot of snow and could make hiking a challenge.

June/July are awesome months to be here, but you have more crowds to contend with. And for weekends, you'll likely need reservations most places you'll want to stay. The 180 day window has already opened and booked for those months. Right now, I'm tracking the 180 day window for September dates. March 16 is the window opening for September 14.

For the national parks, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was still open in mid-October. We stayed at the CG inside the park on the final week of operation and it was incredible. Then moved around to the South Rim to Trailer Village inside the park, which was really nice and convenient. I'd made reservations at both places early, so had a prime spot at the North Rim. There are other options as well, outside the park near the entrance, as well as at Jacob Lake.

In SW Colorado, as is the case here in northern Colorado, some USFS CGs will start to close in mid-September. But there will be others that will stay open a bit longer, depending on elevation. That is the key -- elevation. There still should be good opportunities in and around Durango, Mancos, and Cortez areas, both USFS as well as commercial.

In May you can still get a freak snow storm or rain. The high passes on the Alpine Loop will stand a chance of being closed with snow till July.

I have made more than 12 trips to northern Arizona in May for a mining reclamation contract at Black Mesa. My Dad used to have a ranch SE of Flag. The weather can be all over the place. We have had 90 degrees, but also snow. Be ready for any kind of weather. You will beat the crowds. I wish I was going with you.

Early is not all Bad - the Aspen look Beautiful as they put on the Green Leaves - BUT - too early for the July Bloom in the upper trails - if you are going for Fall Color try to roll in Mid September as they will likely be long gone in October.

IMHO you will be hard pressed to find a more Beautiful spot to spend the Last couple weeks of September, than the San Juan's.

Look through this link - LINK

If I were You I'd try to do all three then report back as to what you thought. :B

If I were to pick ONE spot in the US to spend the entire summer it would be the San Juan's.

We do all our travels in early June. Spring flowers, snow melt makes nice water falls. No late summer/fall fires and smoke. When in Durango check out the train ride
