We plan to drive from Bham, Al to Bristol, Tn first day. Second day on to Winchester, Va. Using that as our base, we will spend time in Harpers Ferry, WV and drive up to Shanksville, PA. When leaving Winchester we will visit New River Gorge in WV. Any recommendation on campgrounds on this trip will be helpful...........thanks.

Another option about 48 miles up I81 is Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia. The campground you want is just outside the park, used to be private campground, now state owned. It is easy in and out and has full hookup sites. Also close to I81. Campground restaurant has good food and prices seemed reasonable. The campgrounds inside the park can be more challenging to get around.

Have also stayed at Natural Tunnel State Park. New campground is very nice.

Also near Kingsport and I81 is Warriors Path State Park. Do not know much about it.

In West Virginia, I would recommend Pipestem State Resort Park. They have everything. Nice campground,2 restaurants, one which you take a cable car to get to. Indoor and outdoor pools, golf, mini golf, nature walks, boating, horseback riding etc.

Summer Wind Overnight RV Park. Exit 150 off I-64 in West Virginia. This is near New River Gorge. You will not find a cleaner park, and the nicest host. Only about 12 sites, W-E-S, no cable. Recommend calling if you stay it usually fills up every night in the summer.

If you plan to stay in Bristol, they have a locality owned park that is just off of exit 7 (Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol, VA) that is cheap, clean and well-patrolled. They have limited power/water sites. Just off the interstate in TN is Davy Crockett State Park.

If you get off of I-81 and head north on I-26, 17 miles into Va from Kingsport, TN, you will find Natural Tunnel State Park. It has water/electric and has some HUGE back-in sites, some close to 80 ft long. It has a new bath house with individual shower rooms and laundry.

The exit is about 20 miles south of Bristol, VA/TN, so the driving difference would be about the same. (Last exit in TN is exit 74).
