Hello Friends,

We are heading west from Austin on I-10 soon and need some help finding a nice park to spend the first night. We would like to drive 350-400 miles that day so it would put us around the Balmorhea, Tx area.

Thanks!

It is absolutely amazing that the best state park swimming hole in the entire state of Texas is way out west - at Balmorhea.

Even the best place for scuba diving training.

Summer time - reservations are essential.

If you can't get in - Saddleback is ok. If you want more than a day - Davis Mountains SP is about 35 miles south and a good place to stop. At 5,000 ft elevation - it's not near as hot as places like Fort Stockton where you can fry eggs on your TV hood at 7 am.

I never knew there were that many people in West Texas. The park does implement a crowd control measure - where cars have to line up outside. When one car leaves, another is allowed in.

I've seen overflow parking on Sunday afternoon along the drive and past the parking lot in the grass. The rangers do a great job keeping it all organized. Since we had reservations, we went past all that and set up camp, then went to the pool when the daytrippers began leaving.

Not much to write home about, but the Saddleback Mountain RV Park is located in Balmorhea. Should be OK for an overnight.

Our first night westward every summer is Balmorhea State Park. They have pull-throughs with 50 amp power and even a marginal cable TV connection. But the best part is one of the best swimming holes in the state that is guaranteed to cool you down.
