Where can we camp to hear wolves?

Coyotes are everywhere -- even in suburban Orange County. But I have never heard a wolf howling (except on Youtube). Where are we most likely to hear wolves? My guess is somewhere in Yellowstone, but I am not sure where.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations, especially if you have been lucky enough to actually hear them.

Just take a drive up to Wisconsin! :C

There were so many we could shoot them a couple years back when they removed them from the protected list, but they just recently got put back on the protected list again. Still can shoot them if they go after your livestock though.

The sound of a howling gray wolf is becoming a more common event in Wisconsin. A growing population of wolves now live in Wisconsin, one of about a dozen states in the country where timber wolves exist in the wild....

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about wolves!

Where ever it is, better hurry before they get wiped out in the lower 48. Again.

The first year after I retired I was camping on Lake Of The Woods in Ontario fishing for walleyes and northern pike. One early morning I went for a bike ride and right in the middle of the dirt road was a wolf. It was big and mangy looking and was not in a hurry to run away. I just thought it was sick. I was later told they shed there winter coat at that time of year. I saw a second one the following day. Seeing them that close was pretty exciting. Never heard any howling at night.

The UP of Michigan and Ontario are both places we have heard wolves but it was a few years ago.

The Boundary Water Canoe Area (BWCA)in Minnesota. There is a ton of them there, my son camped there last summer and heard them every night and saw one. Between the wolves and the bears, I wouldn't go in unarmed!

Tiger, that would be cheating! It's got to be real wild wolves. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Actually if it's in Ely Mn there's wolves on both sides of the fence. You do not want to let your dog out at night if your in the bush (woods).

I like listening to the loons at night, sometimes you can hear wolves as well.

I would echo what Quality said hunter's aren't to thrilled with the population increase but tourists are.

Like I said don't leave your pet's unattended in wolf country.

It's a long trip from California, but northeastern Minnesota has a large wolf population, and tons of places to camp in state parks, national forest campground in the Superior National Forest, as well as private campgrounds. There are no guarantees, but the further away from the crowd you get, the better your chances, and stay quiet and low profile in your campsite in the evening. Preferably have a small campground or single site to yourself. I have seen 3 wolves up there, and heard several as well. People up here are a bit upset with the number of wolves, because they do eat deer, but they also draw tourists.
Good luck!

Uh, trackrig, did you look at the unit in profdant's signature? He can portage it across any river, just like taking a canoe across land! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I was measuring a marathon race course near a wildlife sanctuary NE of Denver, and the wolves started howling. That is not a sound I expect to hear around Denver, that's for sure! Great to hear them, even though they are in captivity. Still, a bit disconcerting while riding my bike. They could have caught me, no problem (had they gotten out)!

Have been here and it is GREAT. Take the tour, well worth the donation. We also stayed in the campground. Very peaceful until the Wolves start howling (evening & early morning) but that is what you are there for. What is really great is when they start howling you can walk over closer to the compound and actually watch them. The last miles to the sanctuary is on a wide dirt road but can have a little washboard.

Slough Creek Campground in Yellowstone. May and June. Only concern would be that the mosquitos might drain the last ounce of blood from you before the wolves start howling.
