Wild Fire in Glacier NP - this is bad

The Reynolds Creek Fire burning in Glacier National Forest has now scorched more than 800 acres.

There have been no reported injuries and no damaged buildings at this point.

The fire was first reported at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday and was located near Grizzly Point, approximately six miles east of Logan Pass. Park dispatch received numerous reports of the fire from shuttle bus drivers, Glacier Boat Company employees, park employees and visitors.

The fire is moving quickly in heavy timber with "extreme spread potential," according to a press release from GNP spokeswoman Denise Germann.

Germann says that the fire has burned between 800 and 1,000 acres.

Going To The Sun Road is closed between the St. Mary entrance on the east side and Avalanche on the west side.

There is no access to any trails or backcountry areas from Going To The Sun Road at this time.

The Rising Sun Motor Inn and the Rising Sun Campground were evacuated on Tuesday evening.

Park rangers and staff are searching for backcountry hikers in the area to evacuate them and direct them to safety.

The parking areas of the St. Mary Visitor Center and the Apgar Visitor Center have been established as gathering areas for park visitors that may have been separated from their group.

All interpretive programs in the St. Mary Valley are canceled until further notice.

A temporary flight restriction over the fire area has been implemented.

A Type II Interagency Incident Command Team has been ordered and should arrive on Wednesday.

Resources from Flathead National Forest, Glacier County, East Glacier, Babb, St Mary, and Cut Bank, Fire Departments, Blackfeet Fire Management, Montana Department of Natural Resources, Evergreen and West Valley Fire Departments and Flathead County are assisting Glacier National Park.

A fire information phone line has been established at 406-732-7791.

Here is the latest on the fire. The St Mary vistor center reopened this morning. There was a report that the Sun Road and the St Mary's campground would reopen this week but the Park Service has not confirmed this.

In our travels we have gone thru several burn areas and, although it takes a long time, it is - as has been said - so good to see the renewed growth. I remember coming up to Glacier years ago along the 89 and seeing burn area; not sure how that looks now but sure a lot better than it did those years ago. (We come up the 464 now so have not seen it on the 89 for several years).

Interesting from one of the updates :

Farmer said given the current low relative humidity and strong winds, the Reynolds Creek blaze has potential to double in size every day that it burns. He pointed out that officials only call in a Type 1 Incident Management Team in the most extreme situations.

"It's in a an area that has to be totally suppressed," said Farmer. "The misnomer is the 'let it burn policy'. That does not exist on the east side of Glacier National Park, so, they are very behind about putting it out," explained Farmer.

Although we feel horrible it happened, We are looking at it as an adventure!

Now THAT'S the spirit! We visited Yellowstone before and after wildfires and it's surprising how the view changes. What's even more amazing is the rejuvenation of the plants and landscape after such a catastrophic event. We saw things we had never seen before. Some spots had an eerie beauty about them and some showed the freshness of new growth. It was amazing.

It sounds like none of the buildings in the park were destroyed by the fire. The St. Mary's KOA is being used as a base camp for firefighters, and the other closed areas are being used as staging areas for firefighting equipment.

The west side of the park is open, and smoke is not an issue. Today, park officials are saying the fire had not spread as far as they thought it would. It had consumed maybe 5,000 acres, as of this morning, was headed towards a fire block firefighters had created. I have not seen any fire helicopters all day; last night we saw a few (or one a few different times) fly over the West Glacier KOA on their way to the fire.

A tour we had booked for today was only half full, the itinerary was adjusted to accommodate the road closure, but it was still a fun day!

Although we feel horrible it happened, We are looking at it as an adventure!:B

Sorry you are still incorrect. Yes, the St Mary area is smokey and/or evacuated. The majority of the East side of the park is neither very smokey or evacuated. Take a look at the Many Glacier and Two Med web cams.

We have friends who were there and left Wed morning due to the smoke. And my heart goes out the KOA on the east side as it is a great place; we have been there 3 times.

We cancelled our trip to Glacier next week. Our main point in going was to do the GTTS road. We also wanted to experience the whole park and coming from the west side we would need to be able to drive the GTTS sun road to get to some of our destinations. We just felt it would be better to wait till next year. Couldn't see driving 650 miles one way and not getting to see everything. We've also dealt with smoke from forest fires here in Oregon in years past. It's not really worth it to be in a smokey area. We realize that the west half is fine but that's just 1/2 the park. It's like going to the coast and walking out on the beach but you can't see the ocean. I suppose if they open the road next week then I guess we should've gone. It's not going anywhere so we'll just wait till next year when conditions should be more favorable.

Again, not sure of all the ramifications going on there but probably the town of West Glacier and even up to Lake McDonald are going ok - but would hardly classify that at "normal".

And emergency people might be coming in from the west as well; they don't need crowds anyplace near where they are trying to do their jobs.


Sorry but the "Whole East Side" of the Park is NOT closed. The East side of the Going to the Sun Road and some of St Mary is closed. Two Medicine and Many Glacier are NOT closed.

We are at the West Glacier KOA. Only occasionally smell smoke. Yesterday the air tested in the normal range. The only problems the fire has caused from our perspective is the partial closure of Road to The Sun. That has changed the route of some of the Park's guided tours.

This is our first visit to Glacier. It is amazing!
