Hello. I'm getting some things together for our Yellowstone trip next year. I'm already leaning on this route, but figured i'de ask anyway. Has anyone towed or taken their RV into Yellowstone from Red Lodge MT (212)? I know it is very high at 12k ft elevation, I don't have a problem with this, the wife may be surprised though! Just wondering if anyone has done this route with an RV. I'de rather not come in somewhere else and then drive back to 212 to do this route.

Just looking for comments. I know the other routes into Yellowstone, I'm just looking for something different that we don't see on other trips.

Thanks!

Yes still have the 02 with 90k miles. it is kept up better than the most cars on the road. When I put the new hitch on last year I had to drop the fuel tank, it got a new fuel pump then. I do my fluids very often. trans every 25k, diffs every 25k and so on. I trust my truck more than a bran new car. not worried about power or anything, even my skills towing I am comfortable with. I think I would be more worried about the people not towing and new to mountains more than anything! there are more than enough turn outs to pull off and let others pass or to stop and sight see.

This trip wont happen till 2017, so those of you worried have until then to avoid me if your worried. and that's fine with me less cars for me to worry about! :B

Well, the first time I drove it was in 1963 in a 1953 Chevy with my wife and mother. The next time was in the late 70s with a '74 Ford pickup with a camper mounted on it. It is a beautiful drive! I would love to do it again but at 71 years old and a 30' motorhome I doubt that I will. I would do it in our '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee we tow if I had the chance. We drove that up Pikes Peak in 2014. It will be a challenge with your trailer but it is something I would have done in my younger days!
Best wishes, good luck, and enjoy if you choose to do it.

P.S. If your truck is in good shape, I wouldn't worry about its age. Our '99 Jeep has been in the garage for repairs 2 times at 103000 miles and I would drive it anywhere that I would drive my 2014 Chevy pickup that has 18000 miles!:W :B

I don't believe anyone has commented on the age of you vehicle. if your tv is still the'02, I would rethink any trip of that distance from IL. my '02 sits in the garage most of the year (I drive it locally nov to march and snowplow my driveway with it) and do not pull my trailer with it anymore. 14 - 15 years old, yikes. since my '02 turned 10 it has been in the shop about once per month. well, on second thought, maybe I can pull some more since half the parts including: transmission, drive shaft, water pump, exhaust, transfer case, rear axle, etc. are rebuilt or new.

We took our Dodge on that trip. 4000 miles round trip from Indiana to Yellowstone and back. My truck had 320,000 miles on it when we left. Granted I do take pretty good care of it and made sure every fluid had been changed. I changed the brakes pads and rotors in the front too. The only problem we had was the air conditioning quit working about 6 hours from home coming back. Lucky for us it wasn't to hot outside.

My 2006 Dodge has about 300K miles. No problem. But is is only 10 years old. . . . :B

Good news is that the OP is going east to west, so he's heading uphill on the steeper, switchbackier sections. (Had to try out a new word!)

I've driven the Beartooth and the scenery is spectacular. But the MH was parked in Grizzly RV Park and I was driving the 4WD Jeep Wrangler toad. More importantly, I didn't have anybody riding shotgun. Big difference if you don't have personal control of the steering wheel and brakes. Rumor has it that there are places where you can see your own rear license plate thru the front windshield, and I think I did. Would I drive it again? No thank you.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Thanks Ernest. that`s one of the videos I found. going by that and a few others I don`t see anything bad about it! yes it would be nice to do it with out the trailer, but I don`t have that kind of time! It seems there are plenty of pullouts and areas to park.

We took the Beartooth Hwy route from Red Lodge to Yellowstone last September. We were hauling the truck camper. It's a steep and winding, but beautiful drive. We pulled off several times to enjoy the view.
I would recommend not taking the camper. The reason would be that you will want to be able to look around while driving and you will want to pull off every chance you get to see all of Gods beautiful creation. It will be harder to do this while pulling a camper.
Don't forget to take some jackets and hats. It's cold and windy on the top.
Below are some snapshots on the Beartooth Hwy from our trip last September.

According the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers' (highly recommended, by the way), regarding Bear Tooth Pass "the descent from the west summit to the bottom on the Montana side (eastbound) is 22 miles of 6-8%. The road is narrow with very few places to pull over. There are numerous 15-25 mph hairpin turns.

Descending eastbound from the west summit the first 1-1/2 miles are 8% downhill followed by 1-1/2 mi. of 5-7% uphill to the east summit.

The first 4 mi. downhill from the east summit is 8% with 20 mph hairpins. Then there are 10 mi of steady 5-6% grade with very little shoulder. After this 10 mi section it opens up a little but the grade is still 5-6%. The descent is completed about 7 mi west of Red Lodge, MT.

The westbound descent is 6-7% grade with 15-25 mph hairpin turns. 18 miles further is a bridge which ices easily. The last few miles have 7-8% grades."

It doesn't sound like a fun site-seeing drive to me! ๐Ÿ™‚

Let's examine some of your numbers (which you are quoting from Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers, I assume.)

the descent from the west summit to the bottom on the Montana side (eastbound) is 22 miles of 6-8%

It's not clear where the bottom of the highway is but I'll except your later comment that is about 7 miles from Red Lodge. (That would be 24 miles, but let's stay with your 22 miles. The greater the distance the greater the discrepancy will be.) Since there is 3 miles between the two summits,

The first 4 mi. downhill from the east summit is 8% with 20 mph hairpins. Then there are 10 mi of steady 5-6% grade with very little shoulder. After this 10 mi section it opens up a little but the grade is still 5-6%.

is talking about a 19-mile descent.

8% grade for 4 miles is .32 miles of elevation change
5.5% grade (the average of 5-6%) for 10 miles is .55 miles of elevation change.
5.5% for 5 miles is .275 miles of elevation change.

That's 6045.6 feet of descent from the east summit to 7 miles south of Red Lodge.

But Red Lodge has an elevation of 5500 feet, the east summit has ah elevation of 10,880 feet. So the elevation change between Red Lodge and the east summit is only 5380 feet. And there is a bigger discrepancy if we remember that as you leave Red Lodge, the first 7 miles are gaining elevation. (At 7 miles south of Red Lodge, the elevation is 6400 feet.) So your book has descended more that 6000 feet, where there is only 4480 feet of elevation change.

One could use the low numbers - 5% instead of the average of 5-6% and still get a total descent of 5650 feet which is still more than the total descent to Red Lodge and even more so to 7 miles south of Red Lodge.

I believe the west side numbers are equally wrong, but you don't provide enough information to do the same analysis.

All of this may sound likes I'm arguing in favor of pulling a trailer over the Beartooth Pass. But, as I stated in my first post in the thread, that is not the case.
