We are planning a summer 2016 trip from the Virginia to Yellowstone. We plan to be in that area 5-7 days. I realize we can not see it all in that amount of time, but should we stay inside the park or outside the park and drive in everyday? I pull a 38' fifth wheel with a long bed crewcab truck so finding a space that I can fit in is my concern. If anyone has been in a similar situation with similar time constraints, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Yep. I get frustrated at some of the "search the forum" answers for questions that are semi-specific but there have been several threads just in the last month and you find the answer to just about any campground question you have in Yellowstone, West Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.

But, enjoy the trip! Went last summer for 5 days. Not ideal but beats nothing.

Stay inside the park if at all possible! The extra time driving in and out of the park wastes time when you won't have enough of it anyways.

There are several campgrounds with spots for a 40' camper, and room for a truck.

There must be scores of long threads on Yellowstone. It's probably one of the top ten questions in this forum. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for Yellowstone threads and you'll get a lot of info.

No you should be OK just make reservations when they open up for that time period. Fishing Bridge is the only CG inside the park with utilities. It's just a parking lot essentially but most people don't spend much time there and are out in the park.

The plan is summer 2016. Am I that far behind in getting a reservation 14 months from now? Wow!

YNP is big. Traffic is either very slow or stopped. It stops every time someone spots any critter and stops in the middle of the road to gawk at it. If you stay outside the park you will be spending hours every morning and evening getting back to your camp site. Even staying near the center of the park at Fishing Bridge you'll be spending a lot of time in the car.

However getting a reservation this late for a summer trip may be difficult or impossible. Better decide soon and make what reservations that you can.

I would make a reservation inside if you can fit it in. Getting in and out daily generally makes for long lineups. It's a big place and you don't want to spend time going through the gates.
