Clearance lights on at the campground

I've seen a few TT's and a 5r once in a while with the clearance lights on at night. Nice touch...but how is this mod made? I assume this is not a "factory" deal since I've seen similar trailers to ours this way.

Note: I would have asked the folks that did it but they were out and about when I noticed it...we were at Fort Wilderness.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Good point, I think the vision issues are something that is easily overlooked. For us, once it's dark- our awning light and step light goes on. I've recently started this fuse trick, but have only done it once or twice depending on the campsite layout and if my rear lights would be facing other campers or not. However, for me, all lights go off when we turn in for the night.

For the original poster, here's how you do it:

I don't think that anybody is complaining about having light to eat by. Last I checked it would be difficult to eat by the light of my clearance lights.

It's been a while since we had a "too much light" debate around here. Once we're done with this I propose we start a campfire smoke thread.

Unless another campsite is lit up like the Vegas strip, lights at at campsite don't bother me. If you want complete darkness go boondocking or go to a CG that for some reason doesn't like lit up campsites. Don't try and enforce your opinions on others that are in contradiction to actual CG rules or actual laws.

Barking dogs never seem to bother the owner. Lights do not bother the owner, they even like them.

I use this solar porch light; it gives just enough light to find the keyhole.

I rigged up my 5'er and truck so that the flashers on the truck alternate with the 5'er lights. So far no one likes it where we camp.

Don't see how a couple of 2 inch red lights is going to bother anyone at night.

The problem is that one person does it. Then another. Then a few more. And before you know it half the campers are lit up, and the other half hate it, cause the dark is disturbed.

Personally I like the sound of my trucks horn. But when I hit the "panic button" on my remote, others don't seem to like it so much. Even if I do it at lunch time, when not quiet time and everyone is awake. So I recommend people only do that when someone else has their clearance lights on or flashing. Both are pretty much the same, in my opinion.

I recently tested out the 10a fuse trick ChooChooMan74 mentions.... awesome and simple. I generally prefer a darkened campsite, but occasionally use the awning lights when hanging around outside.

another vote for no more lights than needed.
Kids can find the camper ok without it.... and if they can't they shouldn't be going alone anyway.

I once camped next to a guy that though bucket lights were cool i guess. Man, that park looked like a parking lot at walmart, but without the pavement and lines. ugh. I don't even like lanterns

All you need is to insert a 10amp fuse in the trailer plug. If you want to really annoy the neighbors, use a flasher.

I agree that clearance lights MAY not be all that bright but if you are star gazing-dark is nice. I wonder if a remote control is available so you can light up when you arrive back at camp or whatever? Anybody try that?

wouldn't this light up all of the lights, front/back, etc.? but no, it wouldn't be any more intrusive than a string of LED lights on the awning.

Pins 3 and 4 on the trailer harness get jumped. Stick a 5 amp blade fuse in there..

I actually made a plug for my camper. I used a female plug like whats on the tow veicle and jumped 3 and 4 with a fuse holder and 5 amp fuse.

I like the look at the campground and the kids could find the camper at night. I dont have to mess with party lights.

Also If I had to leave the trailer on the side of the road at night in case of break down/flat tire I can light the trailer up. ( Your not typically gonna leave your trailer but its possible you may need to get air for the spare tire if you did not maintain it)
