Microwave replacement

The 14 year old built-in Sharp microwave in our coach lost its magic smoke a few days ago. I was about to order a new $135 unit and trim kit from Camping World, when I decided to see what the local Walmart store had on the shelves first. I measured the old unit, and then carefully measured the display units in the store. I found a Hamilton Beach 1000 watt 1.1 cu. ft. oven that was within an 1/8 of an inch of the height and width of the old unit, and 1/2 an inch shallower, for just $67. It took about 20 minutes to remove the trim kit from the old oven, modify the mounting straps slightly for the shallower depth, and install it on the new unit. The only other mod needed was repositioning two spacer blocks in the cabinet, to accommodate the new unit's rubber feet locations. All in all, less than an hour's work, plus the time to fetch the new microwave from the store, and we have a nice new black and stainless steel microwave that looks right at home in the same space the old one lived in for so many years.

We replaced ours with one from Sears. The vent kit around the old one was adjustable so piece of cake to change out. Yours looks great. Our new one made the stove area look really remodeled except for the old fake wood on fridge so we ordered a piece of black laminate from local cabinet maker and replaced the fake wood - what a great improvement.

My microwave deal worked the other way. Ended up that CW had a micro/convection on sale. The size fi almost perfect to replace our old microwave.

In December 2014 my Sharp R820BK microwave/convection oven just stopped working. I woke up one morning and went to heat something in the microwave and the was no time being displayed. Nothing worked on the keypad. It worked fine the day before. The AC outlet tested fine.

I put off removing it and looking at it until earlier this month. I removed the microwave and opened the case. The Littelfuse Series 314 20A 250V fast acting ceramic cartridge fuse had blown. I bought a 5-pack of the exact same fuse on eBay for $6.53 USD, including shipping. I replaced the fuse and life returned to the microwave.

If one's microwave quits - without an apparent catastrophic failure - check the internal fuse. Replacing the fuse may be all that is needed.

I replaced a fuse in the microwave in a previous coach and got another 3 or 4 years of service out of it. This one fried the magnetron though, so there wasn't much chance of economically repairing it, assuming parts are still available.

Heh! Exactly what we did right after the basic "cup of water" functionality test. :B
