2 piece lug nuts

A question On a fifth wheel with aluminum wheels. I have the lug nuts that have a chrome cover over the lug nut( all 1 piece all though it is actually 2 pieces made together)). Several of the covers are loose, so is there a regular lug nut that will work, in place of the 2 piece lug nut? I'm concerned in the case of a need to change a tire on the road the cover will not hold so I can get the lug nut off.
I know this is a bad example, but know of no other way to explain it.
I posted this on another forum to get a larger source of ideas.

I use only six point sockets on all the lugnuts, trucks, trailers, cars.

I carry my breaker bar, extensions, regular ratchet, speed wrench, sockets for both my wheels (deep and regular) =and= my Companion hitch as well as my torque wrench in their own separate box.

I had a flat in NC, and told my wife, no problem, I have a 4 way lug wrench, this shouldn't take but a few minutes. Typically steel nuts with stainless covers crimped on. Yes, they get loose with age/use, but usually not a problem. If you are using a lug wrench or 6-point socket, the stainless layer gets trapped between the socket and the lug nut, so there's no danger of them "stripping out" where you are only spinning the outer cover and not the nut itself. If they bother you, then get the chrome ones....just be sure to get the right length and seat bevel.

I have found the covers difficult to remove prior to remove the nuts. As said, 1 piece chrome ( Acorn Nuts) can be found almost anywhere including auto parts store. Make sure that the diameter at the large end of the taper fits your rim holes properly. I bought a set where that diameter was slightly too large and they hit the hole diameter before the taper contacted the rim. Heard a thump, thump and 2 broken studs and a wheel that almost fell off.

Aren't those just decorative covers that are removed before using a lug wrench? That is the type on my MH.

Just go to one piece chrome lug nuts and you will not have any problems.

I think I know what you're talking about. They are actually one lug nut with a tin cover made onto the nut. Like newman said a tire shop can fix you up. Just FYI, many of these fail due to being torqued too much or someone using an impact wrench on these and again over-torqueing (rattling up). A 5/8" stud with an aluminum wheel should be torqued to 130-140 ft. lbs. A 9/16" stud should be 110-120 ft. lbs. Don't forget to recheck torque on aluminum wheels several (I do 5 times over the course of 750 miles) any time the wheel as been removed for any reason. You'll find they can be tightened up for the first 4 retorquings. HTHs rockin'
