I have a Husky 16K manual slider. I have only once (as of yet) been in a situation that I needed to use the slider while on the road. Had to back into a driveway to turn around on a closed entrance into a fairground. I do slide the hitch back when I pull into a campground. Most of the time I don't need it but I wouldn't want to be without it.

HAVE a PR SuperGlide on my short bed truck - and it *DOES* get used a lot..:)

I'm sure a lot depends on the front end configuration of your 5th.

Haven't owned any other brand - so can't compare........but, I KNOW
FOR SURE my 5th would have "got" my cab on lots of occasions without it..:C

.

On edit:
Noticed the post by the "Bionic Man" above about lifting the SuperGlide.

I'm way, WAY less than bionic - - but lift my SuperGlide with *one finger*, removed and done in about 10 minutes total..:W

Just drive under. Hook up. Push the button on the HF Cable Hoist, lift, drive out, lower it onto a furniture dolly. Roll the hitch to a convenient corner of the garage.

Others use various lifting techniques besides the obvious "two men and a boy" requirement: "cherry picker" style engine hoists, chain hoists, crane hoist, etc.

Any of those items come in handy for other chores also..:C

I've had both. The Reese could be a PITA because I had to drop the landing gear and reduce pin weight in order to get it to slide, then pull the landing gear back up. Advantage was it was light enough to take out of the truck by myself, and was considerably less expensive than the Superglide.

The Superglide was great as it was automatic and I didn't have to think about anything. Downside is it was more difficult to hook up (problem with my king pin), and that hitch is a HEAVY mother. You need two men to get it out of the bed of the truck.

Whatever you get, strongly consider getting something that has under bed rails. Makes the bed a lot easier to use when the hitch is out.

Good luck.

The new 5ver fronts are awesome and provide more than enough turning capability for me. When I first got my 2012 36ft Crusader and Dodge 3500 SB I was concerned about maybe needing a slider, I installed the B&W turnover with their Basic companion which offers some fore aft movement in the hitch. I hooked up and slowly jack knifed the trailer way beyond where I would ever get to and there was still room between the cab and trailer to play.

Just remember, every truck, rv, and driver is a bit different,
so if Joe Smo says it's ok, he's saying it's ok for his situation.
and if it isn't ok for yours, he's not going to pay for the damage !

So far I think the disussion has been about about flat turns....
start to think about off camber turns and it gets to be more of a concern...

The storage lot we use comes downhill,
has a sharp left turn at the bottom of the hill
(more than 90 degrees that I try to straighten as much as possible)
and then goes back uphill.

With the 5er still pointed downhill and the truck turned and pointed uphill,
the cab to 5er corner distance is very short even with our superglide...

To each his own, but it's one less thing I have to think about when trying to back into a new camping spot ๐Ÿ™‚ YRMV - good luck !

Then you added in another post, "it is amazing at how people can quote other people but not answer the ops question. I at least answered the question "

Yes, you answered the question...others of us didn't give a "specific" brand, though I did tell that I had the Reese 16K slider for years and it worked great..

So in your other post, what answer did you give the OP that several others of us didn't:h

More than several of us, like you, recommended a slider hitch, thus, question/opinion, asked and answered, not only by you but by several of us...How is that amazing to you that WE didn't answer the OP's question:h I even answered on a specific hitch has asked about...The Reese 16K slider......

I know on my 5'r with the relieved corners, even with my SuperGlide, I have had situations where the front corners have come real (within 4 inches) close. I will say however, that since I have the SuperGlide I really don't worry about it. But when in a sharp backing turn or a tight u-turn, I do notice how close the front corners come. I really think if I had to do it over again, I would buy the SuperGlide.

I have used this same hitch on 3 different trucks. The Sidewinder will perform the same benefit. And it works fine. But chances are when you replace your trailer, you'll need a new Sidewinder. When all costs are considered the Sidewinder may not be all that much (if any) cheaper.

All that being said, I would rather have the SuperGlide than a Sidewinder. And a Sidewinder rather than a manual slider. And a manual slider rather than no slider.

pretty doggone good analogy Vulcaneer, I agree with you 100%

There are still short pinboxes on 5er's...I see just as many with short pin boxes on dealers lot's as I do seeing 5er's with extended pin boxes.

....I was making a left turn when I hit the top of my cab with the 5er......

how did you hit the cab making a left turn with a longwheel base truck?

It was an extended cab short bed truck....made a left turn out off my road onto the main road and the front cap hit the top left back part of the cab, putting a dent in it...

Take some measurements.......

From center line/center point directly over your rear axle to the corner of cab, to the center of cab and to one point in between those two.

Then measure from center of king pin to corner of 5vr

Got enough room??

IF not get a slider of your choice.

Have you checked your available payload?
That 5vr pin weight will be close to 3000# or more
Tow rating may be listed as 'capable' but in reality trucks run out of GVWR, rear axle weight rating, rear tire max load rating, payload rating long before reaching tow rating.
Towing is so much more enjoyable when within the actual limits of truck vs marketing numbers.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

I would do some more checking before buying a slider. Many hitches are adjustable ahead and back. I have a B&W that can easily be moved.

My last two trucks have been short beds 6' 9", and there has been no problem with either of the FWs I pulled with them. I can move the one I have now back 4 inches more if I wanted.

You have to be careful when turning too short with any trailer, be it a TT, boat trailer, or sled trailer.

What did your dealer tell you?. Is there a brochure on the 5er telling about the advantages of the style of the front cap, ie works great for short bed trucks, no slide hitch needed?...IF your 5er has the front cap that is recessed on both sides you may be just fine with a regular hitch...
