6.7 Diesel fuel mileage

Cougarnewbie

Looking at a 2019 F-350 with a 6.7 diesel. Currently have a Triton V-10 that gets about 9 mpg. (about 6 mpg towing.) The sticker doesn't list mileage on the diesel. Wondering if the diesel gets better mpg and will it be enough to offset the higher cost of diesel fuel?(3.31 rear end)
Thanks

When towing, I get 11-12 the few times Iโ€™ve checked.

I like the new Ford 7.3. It has pushrods and doesnโ€™t need to turn 6thousand eleventeen rpm to do the work. Burns gasohol.

Wonder how it would pull if it had a turbocharger?

Absolutely DISAGREE!!!

I towed 20,500# combined with my 98 12V 2500 SRW 4x4 hand calc West Coast toeing 10.5 mpg AVERAGE. The RV was NOT over 12' 6" and was NOT a wide body.

Same roads but 29k combined wide body 13' 2" high towed with 11 HO DRW RAM 4x4 9.5 mpg hand calc.

Same roads 33k combined wide body 13' 5" high towed with current 15 DRW RAM 4x4 9.5 mpg Hand calc.

Same as above double towing at 35k combined 9.0 mpg hand calc.

I say the mileage is MUCH better!

All of the older trucks got better fuel economy. The DPF, SCR and all of the rest have hurt fuel economy. Most guys that delete are doing it for fuel economy not to "roll coal"

I have a 2016 F350 Plat and it is always 17-21 unless in a heavy head wind
Towing however is around 10-12
Itโ€™s totally stock
My son has identical truck with larger tires and lift kit, his mileage dropped a lot

I'd love to drop my '02 body (and VIN plate) onto an '07 LBZ D'max and frame. Almost 100 more hp, few hundred more pounds cargo, lower tags. If can't do that, do an LBZ / 6-speed Allie build and drop that into my '02. ๐Ÿ™‚

Diesels readily take to simple modifications. Get the air and get the air out. Add a new air intake and a 4 inch exhaust. Then a simple tuner. Tow only with a tow setting. That is how I got to 23.8 mpg with a one ton Ford 7.3. It gets around 18 towing a 20 foot boat. It gets around 14 mpg towing a trailer that is not too heavy.

How many times does this need to be repeated??

You don't buy a diesel to save money. You buy a diesel because you want/need the pulling power.

I've found it interesting that, on the whole, diesel trucks get about 10-11 mpg ON AVERAGE, across all brands and weights, when towing. Some get worse, some better. Hiway mileage is all over the place. Best mileage I've ever seen was right at 23, running 75 mph, with an empty 14 cu ft chest freezer tucked up behind the cab. Going from PHX to Cortez CO. Around here in AZ, my normal, unladen, hiway mileage is 19-21, running 65-75. If I drop down to around 60, I'll gain another .5-1 mph, at best.

I use 10 for my fuel-stop calcs, yet I still carry a 5 gal jug for CYA. I'm at my payload limit, usually, so don't have any spare to give for an aux tank. Can't drive more'n about 2-2.5 hours without a pit stop anyway, so there's even less incentive to carry more fuel. :B There are times that I'll stop and dump the 5 gals in to get me through a higher-priced town to where fuel's a bit cheaper.

Diesels have lost the fuel economy advantage that they used to have as far as towing goes. Part of this is due to emissions and part is due to the increased hp and torque that they produce. They do get a little better unloaded because of the newer 6 speed and up transmissions.

My 05 Ford diesel would get about 14 mpg towing but also got only 15 mpg empty. My 16 Ford diesel gets 9-10 mpg towing and 17-18 on the highway (slow down to 60 mph and it will get closer to 20 mpg). My 13 2wd SD with the Powerstroke would get 21 mpg doing 60 mph.

Towing a heavy load my diesel will beat my ecoboost by 20%-25% but towing a light load (like a Polaris rzr on a 12' trailer I only get about 10% better. I have taken many trips to Colorado with both the ecoboost and the SD and am always disappointed that the SD only gets 1 mpg better. In my experience if you only tow light loads the diesel has no advantage other than the weight of the truck makes towing less stressful

It is easier to ask a question rater than use the search function.

My 2012 F350 DRW towing a 19,000 lb 5er gets normally 9 to 10 mpg driving 63 to 65 mph. In the mountains it may get down to 7 or 8 mpg. Running solo, at 65 mpg about 17 mpg. Over 70 mph, it drops down to 15 mpg.

I generally see Rams, especially the older 5.9L getting better fuel economy than a Ford.

You must have gotten a GOOD one! Have you filled tank to the top and done the same at the same pump and HAND calculated the mileage?

Only difference between our trucks is mine is 4.10 and yours is 3.73, both are DRW. Yours should get a bit better.

Let's just say I am not in the same Universe as you.

My srw 05 ram 3500 has gotten 19 mpg on the highway on flat ground with 3.73s and a .79 overdrive!

I consistently hit 22mpg with my 98 12V 2500 LB 4x4 2500 auto commuting. Filling to top several tanks in a row same spot same station. My 98 12V 2wd 5 speed on a shorter commute would get in the 23's.

My 2012 F350 6.7 3.55 gets 10-11 towing, 16-17 combined city/hwy, and 19-20 highway, 20+ highway if I keep my foot out of it.
