8700 UVW different - TT vs. 5th Wheel

I have only had TT's in the past but am considering the move to a 5th wheel.

TT UVW 8700# & max wt 10500
5th wheel 8700# & max weight 11500

Truck specs: 2009 chevy Hd2500 2wd, 3.73, 3250 payload, gas 6.0L
9900# towing max

Other than the hitch weight how would the weight tow different? Any possible long term damage to the tranny or engine or truck? 5th wheel hitch weight over the rear tires better than on a rear hitch?

Please any advice will truly help.

I dont haul water & the minimum on waste water.

Thanks

Looks like the Jayco eagle HT 27.5 rlts with dry 8347 & max wt 9900 is going to be the one. Just need to finalize the deal. Thanks.

That FW should be a great fit for you! Your truck will tow it easier than the TT, and get better mileage to boot!

Hope the closing goes well for you,

It also has the Revolution Pin box. Thanks too all. Probably will pick up around Christmas.

As already stated, the drivetrain will not be able to tell the difference. But you will have a more stable setup with the fiver with less driver fatigue. Also easier hookup. While dry weights are the same, you are more likely to carry more cargo with the fiver, but maybe just a few hundred pounds. If pulling power does become an issue, you can change the axle ratio from 3.73 to 4.10 for around $500 at a good speed shop. Fuel milage will decrease unloaded, but may be unchanged when towing.

Your truck should pull the FW just as easily as the TT, and likely even easier. I think the truck will handle the wt. Lower gearing would help the 6.0 do it's job, but should work as is.

Having the hitch wt over the axle, will be a much better experience.

I just went from a 5500lb UVW bumper toy hauler to a 8800lb UVW 5er hauler and honestly the 5er tows WAY nicer. Just as good mileage with the heavier 5er too. 2011 GMC 2500HD handles the weight with no problem. Couldn't give me another bumper pull...

The power train wont notice the difference between the two.

Basically your at maximum with either, so go for it. A TT places about 12% behind the axle and with a correctly setup equalizer system more or less splits the weight between the front and rear axles. A fifth wheel places approx 20% directly on top of the rear axle. So,20% of 11,500 equals approx 2300 directly over the rear axle. Depending on current weights, you may be over loaded.
