Fresh water fill up

I have always believed that there are no stupid questions, but this might be close.

We have always camped in campgrounds and RV resorts, but with the purchase of our new toyhauler, we are wanting to do some dry camping. Being that this rig holds 160 gallons of water, I have read that most don't fill up the water until they get close to their camping spot because of the weight. This tank would be over 1000lbs of water.

My question is where do some of you fill your water tanks? Do you stop in nearby full hookup campgrounds, truck stops, or gas stations? I assume that you might have to pay to fill up, but I have never thought about it until recently. We normally carry 10-20 gallons of water to flush the toilet while traveling.

Thanks for the help, and you are more than welcome to wonder "where has this guy been"

Since the load area is behind the axles, it would be hard to get the maximum weight over them to give you that rating. I think that is why consumer vehicle GVWR is not a total of axle ratings - Many people don't realize that placement of weight affects each axle and wheel differently and few will take the effort to scale and repack until they have it right.

Hmmm. Sticker on mine says GCVWR 33000 GVWR 14500. The trailer is the limit. 19000lbs GVWR on the trailer, which is kind of odd because it has three 7K axles under it. My only guess is that they don't want someone loading a 4K car in the back of it, and breaking the frame.

The weight of the water must be borne by the trailer, its suspension and tires.

And I compute 1,328 pounds, which is heck of a load.

I also have lots of tire on my trailer. 2680 X 6 = 16080 lbs worth of tires just on my axles.

GCWR of 30000 lbs.
GVWR of 13000lbs.
Truck with full fuel and 5th wheel hitch weighs 8360 lbs.

My point exactly. The truck will pull it no problem, its the gross weight of the trailer. With the new Goodyear G614 tires, the limiting factor is the published limits on the trailer.

I should be able to load it and scale it in a few weeks, then I should have a better idea of where I'm at, and if I'll be able to fill the tank for the long trip.

If you are worried about 1000lbs, you don't have enough truck and you have bigger issues to be concerned with other than water weight.

You might take a look at my signature, I probably have a little more truck than you do.
My concern is my 2700lb. Useful load minus 1170lbs of motorcycles, minus 420lbs of generator/toy fuel, minus 100-200 lbs of food and gear, and after you add them up, I am pretty close to my gross weight. If I decide to add some batteries or other equipment, I will have to start limiting some weight and the easiest place to start is the water tank. The concensus seems to be 'take it with you' so I guess its time to load up everything and head to the scale.

Anytime u want to pull a 7% grade, let me know, pretty sure I will walk away from u. And I have plenty of truck for my hauler.

Isn't Burbank where my water flows to when I brush my teeth? Aren't you guys drinking my Santa Clarita gray water? :B

(My office is in Burbank and the water is fine.)

I'll be sure and let those people in Lone Pine know where their water is going........;):E:R:S
