Help!!! Can't open door!!!!

I have a 2007 Cameo with the standard RV door latch and deadbolt. It is parked a home but I cannot open the door. Both the latch handle and the deadbolt are unlocked. The latch handle opens, but does not retract the door latch. All the windows are closed, and there is no access to the interior through any outside compartment, so I cannot enter the unit. In addition, the doorside slide is extended, so I cannot drive the unit to a repair facility. I expect I will have to somehow destroy the entire mechanism to gain access, but how? Has anyone solved this problem in the past? Any comments are appreciated.

There was a recall on deadbolts made by Wesco a few years ago...

Wesco lock recall

I found out about it when I got locked out of my TT. Fortunately I had access to the storage compartment that runs under the bed. We removed enough stuff to allow my grandson to climb in and open one of the emergency windows which allowed me to get in and remove the screws that held the lock in place.

Thanks for the return information on your lock, Ken. Glad to hear you got in.

Thanx for the update! Nothing worse than getting a group of people working on a problem and never hearing the resolution. Good on, you for getting it done!

Well, it's fixed.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I tried the simple solutions first - pressure on the door, moving the trailer, bottle jack under the frame - no luck. The latch would not retract. Door hinges not accessable, slide outs open, so I had to fix it myself, on site (AAA does not do "repairs" on lock assemblies, only work on the locks themselves, which were working fine). With all windows locked and no access from beneath the unit, my options were to break a window to gain access, or to try and demo the lock. If it had been an emergency, breaking the window was the obvious solution, but since I had time, and since the lock needed to be replaced and the window didn't, I went to work on the lock assembly.

The suggestion to "hog" out the screws was not feasible because of the contours of the casting, so I used a pipe wrench and a claw hammer to break the handle off to get access to the plate covering the mechanism. Using a punch and a cold chisel, I managed to get access to the latch and pull it out (my Dremel tool was not powerful enough to use on the casting), but all the pounding had now rattled the deadbolt loose from its lock, and it had moved into the frame! Another 20 minutes of hacking away at the casting and I was able to hook the deadbolt with a piece of coathanger and open the door.

In the future, I will make sure a least one window remains unlocked for access! And although my $95 replacement assembly seems to be of better quality than the original, we will be much more aware of our actions when entering and leaving the trailer - no more slamming the door!

Thx,

Ken

More than likely an easy fix. But as to how previous generations did it, I prefer a chainsaw to a 2 man crosscut saw, my drill instead of a flathead screw driver. The internet is a tool you can use now that previous generations did not have. Why not use it.

"Also, is there not a manual crank to close the slide" - My same vintage Carriage product has a slide override switch that stays on all the time except when manually retracting the slide. Unfortunately, it is in the trailer.

Ditto, I was thinking the same thing. Try tweeting the stabilizers a bit.

your trailer may not be level. I would do that and try again.

We were camping in Florida one fall luckily with friends. Woke up one morning and the latch had broken. I called my neighbor to come over and let us out, the outside handle still worked.

Can you knock the hinge pins out and remove the door? It looks like mine could be opened that way if I had too.

By the way, welcome to the forum. I wish it was under better circumstances. Let us know how you resolved the problem.

There was a recent discussion about closing the door by slamming it or by pulling on the handle, gently closing the door, then letting go of the handle. We do the latter and have never had a latch problem.
