Lowering the Pin Box

I previously asked about creating more space between Truck Bed and 5th Wheel. Some suggested that I should have more holes & be able to lower my Pin Box. I was finally able to get to my rig and look & see.

As you see in the picture. If I lower it, I will have 2 bolts that are no longer supported by the 2 "L channel" supports. Is that a concern?

Hi, I have the same pin box and also needed just a couple of inches for more clearance. did this 2 weeks ago, Towed it a couple hundred miles including some rough dirt roads and it worked well. I was also worried about the bolts below the angle iron but it does not appear to be an issue.

Thanks Triple8!

I very much appreciate the feedback from someone that has done the same thing!

IF you 'lower' pin box are you still going to have 6 bolts per side?

Any adjustment on hitch to 'raise' it?

Biscuit I will still have the 6 bolts.

Are you just going to lower it 1 bolt hole down, it will be fine, but 2 bolt holes down and olny using 3 bolts per side, hmmm I wouldn't do that

Just going to move it down 1 row & keep 6 bolts. I agree about not going down 2 rows & only using 3 bolts.

If lowering doesn't give you enough room I would look at an air assisted pin box. I ended up putting an extention that pushes mine back and up because even with my longbed the nose was making contact with my stacks. After looking at several other trailers I see that my pin box is set back further than any of the others. Oh well, just my luck..

I just noticed my neighbors 2 year old Montana has the same angle braces. Must be the current design on the Lippert pin boxes.

The trailer sits pretty level, but I only have about 3-4 inches of clearance. I take it on some pretty nasty dirt roads and have on occasion had contact between the fiver and my truck bed. Got to get some more clearance

I don't see what the L channel is doing anyway. I've never seen one with that on it. I would not worry about it, just move the box. I would clean it up the rust and give it a coat of paint also.
